Rangers released LHP Justin Marks.
The move clears room on the 40-man roster for Jerome Williams. Marks has been in three different organizations since the beginning of June and will now be on the move again.
Daisuke Matsuzaka has flown back to New York to have his right elbow examined.
The elbow evidently must have been bothering him when he gave up three runs over two relief innings on Thursday. The Mets should have an update on Matsuzaka's status over the weekend.
Rangers purchased the contract of RHP Jerome Williams from Triple-A Round Rock.
Williams will join the rotation on Friday against the Blue Jays. The veteran right-hander held a 6.04 ERA and 38/16 K/BB ratio over 47 2/3 relief innings with the Astros earlier this season and is not a fantasy option.
Rangers placed OF Jake Smolinski on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 22, with a bone bruise in his left foot.
X-rays on Smolinski's foot came back clean, but he's sore enough to where the Rangers figured it would be best to give him a couple weeks off. Jerome Williams has taken his spot on the roster.
Yoenis Cespedes is back in the Athletics' lineup Friday.
Cespedes sat out Thursday after spraining his right thumb on an awkward swing Wednesday. Not only is he back in the lineup Friday, he's making just his second start this season in center field.
Coco Crisp is not in the Athletics' lineup Friday.
The A's are trying to be proactive with some days off for Crisp so that his chronic neck injury doesn't get worse. Yoenis Cespedes is handling center field Friday.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Friday that Jonny Venters (elbow) could be ready for mound work during the team's July 29-August 6 road trip.
Venters long-tossed from 100 feet Friday as he ramps things back up following a platelet-rich plasma injection back in June. The lefty's recovery from Tommy John surgery hasn't gone smoothly, but the Braves haven't given up hope of him contributing this season.
Twins pitching prospect Kohl Stewart has been placed on Low-A Cedar Rapids' disabled list due to a right shoulder impingement.
Stewart dealt with a shoulder issue toward the end of last season and is having problems again, though the Twins at this point don't appear to be overly concerned. The No. 4 overall pick in last year's draft, Stewart owns a 2.42 ERA through 81 2/3 innings of work at the minor league level this season.
