Michael Floyd (dislocated fingers) was catching "soft passes" on Tuesday.

The piece of progress comes six days after coach Bruce Arians said he was "optimistic" Floyd would be ready for the opener. We might not get a real feel for Floyd's Week 1 status until the Cards get in an official practice next week.

Recently acquired G/T Jordan Devey has been named the 49ers' starting right guard.

A third-year undrafted free agent, Devey made the first seven appearances of his career for the Patriots last season, including four starts. He did not fare well. The interior of San Francisco's line is a major trouble spot heading into Week 1.

Marcus Martin has been named the 49ers' starting center.

It became inevitable after Daniel Kilgore (leg, ankle) was placed on the reserve/PUP list. The No. 70 overall pick of last year's draft, Martin missed time with a knee injury before going on to make eight starts. He left much to be desired as both a pass and run blocker, but has lots of time to improve as a 21-year-old NFL sophomore.

Bears coach John Fox was "terse and non-specific" when asked about Alshon Jeffery's calf injury on Tuesday.

Jeffery hasn't practiced since August 11. Fox's Tuesday attitude is alarming on its face, but the Bears' new head coach has already made it clear he thinks he doesn't owe anyone anything when it comes to injury information. Fox views the trivial details of his team as top secret information to be protected in a bunker. It's always concerning when a player misses nearly three weeks of practice, but there's still no compelling reason to believe Jeffery won't be ready for Week 1.

Titans WR Justin Hunter is expected to play in Thursday's preseason finale.

It's confirmation that he's nowhere near the first-team offense. Hunter's roster spot doesn't appear to be in danger, but he's not going to be a factor in the Titans' offense any time soon.

Titans RB David Cobb (calf) is in a walking boot, and remains week to week.

Cobb is looking might shaky for Week 1. At this point, he's just an RB4/5 stash in re-draft leagues.
Sep 1 - 2:15 PM

Johnny Manziel (elbow) has yet to resume throwing.

As expected, he'll miss Thursday's preseason finale. It's a missed opportunity to put something good on film, but Manziel's odds of making starts this years have more to do with Josh McCown's early-season effectiveness than anything else.

Speaking Tuesday, Bills coach Rex Ryan said K Dan Carpenter "needs to kick better."

Carpenter converted 34-of-38 field goal attempts in 2014, but is just 2-of-4 this summer. He's also missed an extra point. Carpenter's Week 1 roster spot is secure, but he can't afford a slow start. The Bills are keeping Jordan Gay as a kickoff specialist.
