Steckenrider earns the call to the bigs with Kyle Barraclough (shoulder) hitting the disabled list. In 7 2/3 frames with the Marlins earlier this season, he held a 3.52 ERA.

Stephen Strasburg (arm) played long-toss in the outfield on Wednesday.

Strasburg was lifted from Sunday's start against the Diamondbacks with discomfort in his right forearm. Michael Taylor (oblique) played catch in the outfield on Wednesday.

Taylor could start taking some light swings before the end of the week. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain just before the All-Star break. Currently up 11.5 games in the NL East, the Nationals have the luxury to allow Taylor some time to recover. He could potentially rejoin the team in early August so long as his rehab continues to progress smoothly.

Stephen Piscotty (groin) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Low-A Peoria on Thursday.

Piscotty will be rehabbing at Low-A at least through the weekend. The initial hope was that he would be activated from the disabled list earlier this week, but he was not quite ready to return to the team when first eligible. Piscotty has been out of action since July 15 with a right groin strain.
