Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe believes that Clay Buchholz will be tabbed as the Red Sox starter on Opening Day.

While Red Sox manager John Farrell generally waits until late in the spring to officially announce the honor, it may be telling that Buchholz will make his spring debut on Tuesday, potentially lining him up for Opening Day on April 6 against the Phillies. The veteran right-hander is the only member of the rotation who was with the team on Opening Day last season.

Khris Davis indicated Friday that he's working to improve his overall plate discipline, getting back to the approach that made him successful in the minor leagues.

Davis admitted his over-aggressiveness led to struggles during his first full season, "I was a little eager, wanting to please too much, too early. I found out I'm human." As the 2014 season progressed, Davis became more impatient at the dish and his numbers suffered. Still, the 27-year-old slashed .244/.299/.457 with 22 homers and 69 RBI in 144 games and could be poised for an even bigger year in 2015 if he can indeed improve his discipline.

Charlie Morton (hip) continued to express optimism Friday on his ability to be ready for the start of the regular season.

The veteran right-hander is recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. While the Pirates are playing things cautiously, he's on track and should be ready to take his first turn through the Pirates rotation once the season begins. He posted a 3.72 ERA and 126/57 K/BB ratio over 157 1/3 innings for the Buccos in 2014.

Cliff Lee (elbow) is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut on Thursday against the Astros.

The 36-year-old southpaw came into camp a bit behind schedule but felt good after throwing live batting practice on Wednesday. As long as he makes it through the spring healthy and exhibits normal velocity, he'll make for a very popular rebound candidate in fantasy drafts.

Dodgers signed OF Travis Witherspoon to a minor league contract.

The 25-year-old outfielder has all of the tools, but has yet to live up to his potential. He spent the 2014 season in the Mariners organization where he slashed .252/.338/.448 with 15 homers, 44 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 99 games at High-A High Desert.

Nationals signed LHP Rich Hill to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Hill will presumably compete for a spot as a situational left-hander in the Nats bullpen. The 34-year-old southpaw appeared in 14 games for the Yankees in 2014, posting a 1.69 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 9/3 K/BB ratio over 5 1/3 innings.

Padres signed OF Tyson Gillies to a minor league contract.

The 26-year-old spent the past five seasons in the Phillies organization, slashing .214/.270/.289 with a pair of homers and 10 RBI in 43 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2014. He'll add organizational depth for the Padres.

Michael Saunders underwent successful surgery on Friday to remove 60% of the meniscus in his left knee and is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks.

Initially, the team feared he'd be sidelined until around the All-Star break, though the tear wasn't as bad as they had feared and they were able to get by simply trimming the meniscus. With a return set around mid-April, the Jays are no longer forced to scrounge up a suitable replacement and will roll with in-house options to cover left field until Saunders is recovered.
