FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers are interested in Joaquin Benoit, but the Padres "would prefer not to trade him within division, if they trade him at all."

It's a little silly, given that San Diego is unlikely to contend before Benoit's contract expires. The 37-year-old has taken over as closer for the Padres following the trade of Huston Street and is under contract for $8 million next season and has an $8 million vesting option for 2016.

Evan Reed has been charged with two counts of third-degree sexual assault as a result of an incident that occurred on March 30 in a Motor City Casino hotel room.

Each charge carries a prison term of up to 15 years if Reed is convicted. Reed allegedly met a 45-year-old woman at a bar that night before taking her back to his room and assaulting her. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said that he has interview numerous witnesses and also reviewed surveillance footage before the charges were brought. Reed, who is currently at Triple-A Toledo, is expected to turn himself into the authorities.

MLB.com's Peter Gammons reports that the Athletics and Giants are "sifting through" potential options at second base, including Luis Valbuena, Asdrubal Cabrera, Aaron Hill, Martin Prado and Gordon Beckham.

With Chase Utley not expected to be traded, the above group is the best of the lot for contenders looking to upgrade at second base. Of the five, only Hill and Beckham list second as their main position. However, all have plenty of experience at the keystone. The D'Backs appear much more willing to deal Hill than Prado.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Royals have "backed off" Jonny Gomes.

The concern is that Gomes is limited to left field or the designated hitter spot, while the Royals are looking for someone who can play right field. Josh Willingham is also not a fit with Kansas City for the same reason. Gomes is making $5 million and will be a free agent after the season.

Marwin Gonzalez (hamstring) is not in the Astros' lineup Wednesday.

Gonzalez is still nursing soreness in his right hamstring after tweaking it last week. He'll avoid the disabled list for the time being, but the Astros will be cautious with his playing time.

C.J. Wilson (ankle) revealed Tuesday that he believes his recent struggles have been due to tightness in his left hip.

Wilson has been out since early July with a sprained ankle, but it's the hip the lefty says was giving him issues well before that. "It had the affect of dragging the ball back over the middle of the plate, which is bad," Wilson deadpanned. "That’s where they hit the ball." Wilson has been doing exercises to loosen the hip and says it's "better, way better." He's expected to rejoin the Angels' rotation this weekend.

David DeJesus (hand) said Tuesday that there's no timetable for when he'll resume swinging a bat.

"We’re going to start in the pool, things like that, and then we’ll progress," he said. DeJesus has already missed six weeks with a fractured left hand and appears to be recovering more slowly than expected. The Rays will probably be happy if they can get him back by the end of August at this point.

Wil Myers - OF - Rays

Wil Myers (wrist) will learn on Friday when he'll begin a rehab assignment.

It will be a day before he resumes taking batting practice. Myers has been hitting off a tee for a few days and played catch in the outfield prior to Tuesday's game. He figures to begin a rehab assignment sometime next week and is on track for a mid-August return.
