Pirates placed RHP George Kontos on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain.

Kontos has made just five appearances for the Pirates since they claimed him off waivers from the Giants on August 5. He'll be sidelined until early September.

Padres activated OF Matt Szczur from the family leave list.

Szczur missed several games while dealing with a private matter. The 28-year-old outfielder has slashed .209/.351/.353 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 88 games this season between the Cubs and Padres.

Padres optioned LHP Kyle McGrath to Triple-A El Paso.

McGrath allowed four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of relief with San Diego. The 25-year-old left-hander should get another look in September after MLB rosters expand.

Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) has resumed a throwing program.

DeSclafani got a second opinion recently on his sore right elbow and it confirmed that he was dealing with tendinitis, not anything structural. Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer says a return this year is "iffy."
Aug 22 - 4:59 PM

Matt Andriese (hip, shin) will make another rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Durham.

Andriese had to make an early exit from his last rehab start Friday at High-A Charlotte after taking a comebacker off his shin, but he escaped with a minor bruise. The 27-year-old right-hander will probably make two appearances with Durham before rejoining the Rays sometime in early September.
Aug 22 - 4:58 PM

Dodgers placed LHP Alex Wood on the 10-day disabled list with SC joint inflammation his left shoulder.

Wood missed time earlier this year with the same issue, but he said he plans to return in 10 days during the Dodgers' early-September series against the Padres. The left-hander stands 14-1 with a 2.41 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 127/30 K/BB ratio in 123 1/3 innings this season.
Aug 22 - 4:56 PM

Josh Tomlin (hamstring) is scheduled to make one rehab start before returning to the Indians' rotation.

That minor league start will come this Friday, so Tomlin should be activated off the disabled list sometime next week. He's been sidelined since late July with a left hamstring strain.
Aug 22 - 4:52 PM

Ryan Merritt will start for the Indians on Friday against the Royals.

Merritt lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last start at the major league level and probably shouldn't be trusted as a fantasy streamer on Friday versus Kansas City. The 25-year-old left-hander has an 85/25 K/BB ratio in 116 innings this season at Triple-A Columbus.
