Christian Yelich had three hits and extended his hitting streak to nine games in a losing effort Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Yelich plated a run with an RBI single in the third to tie the game at 1-1, then gave the Marlins insurance with an RBI double in the seventh to make it 3-1. The young outfielder has struggled at the plate for most of the season, but may be beginning to put things together. Yelich is hitting .266/.341/.376 with five home runs and 18 RBI.

Xander Bogaerts hit a bases-clearing single in the seventh inning to send the Red Sox to a victory over the Marlins on Tuesday.

Bogaerts finished 2-for-4 with a double on the evening. The bases were loaded with two outs in the seventh inning with the Red Sox trailing by two runs when Bogaerts lined a single to right-center, clearing the bases and giving his team the lead. The 22-year-old has hit safely in all six games in July. In those six games, he's registered multiple hits in four and multiple RBI in three. Bogaerts is hitting .304/.341/.418 with three home runs and 40 RBI on the season.

Max Scherzer struggled, allowing five runs in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss on Tuesday as the Nationals fell 5-0 to the Reds.

Scherzer was uncharacteristically hittable, allowing seven hits, four of which went for extra bases. He didn't walk anyone and struck out four in the effort. His ERA moved up a few ticks to 2.12 to go along with a 0.80 WHIP and a 143/14 K/BB ratio in 123 1/3 innings. Scherzer will kick off the second half at home against the Dodgers.

Billy Hamilton went 1-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and a run scored as the Reds took down the Nationals on Tuesday.

Hamilton doubled with one out in the fifth inning, stole third base, then came around to score on a Joey Votto single for the Reds' fourth run of the ballgame. He hasn't been able to hold his own at the plate, batting .221/.271/.290, but when he's reached base, he's been a near-lock to steal at least one base. On the season, Hamilton has stolen 42 bases in 48 attempts.
Jul 7 - 9:40 PM

Joey Votto went 3-for-5 with three RBI, finishing a triple short of the cycle in Tuesday's win against the Nationals.

Votto doubled in a run in the first inning and later scored. He blasted a solo home run in the third, and tacked on an RBI single in the fifth. The first baseman had curiously been held without an extra-base hit in 19 consecutive games dating back to June 15, so Tuesday's performance was a nice way to break the slump. Votto is hitting .281/.390/.492 with 15 home runs and 42 RBI on the season.
Jul 7 - 9:38 PM

Johnny Cueto held the Nationals to just two hits in a shutout to earn the win on Tuesday.

It's his first shutout of the year. He issued only one walk while striking out a season-high 11 batters. One of the two hits was a triple to Ian Desmond to lead off the fifth inning, but the right-hander rebounded with three consecutive strikeouts. Cueto appears to be getting stronger as the season progresses. He has a 2.61 ERA with a 0.87 WHIP and a 111/21 K/BB ratio in 113 2/3 innings. His first half will come to a close in Miami against the Marlins.
Jul 7 - 9:36 PM

Wily Peralta (oblique) threw live batting practice on Tuesday.

It's the first time he's faced hitters since straining his oblique back in late May. "He was great," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "It's the next step, facing hitters. To me, it was an easy, effortless session. He did a nice job." Peralta is expected to make 2-3 rehab starts before rejoining Milwaukee's rotation later this month.
Jul 7 - 9:29 PM

Josh Tomlin (shoulder) has begun a rehab assignment.

Tomlin pitched two innings Sunday for the Tribe's Arizona Rookie League club and will move up to Double-A Akron on Friday. Working his way back from surgery on his right AC joint, Tomlin should be an option for the Indians within the next few weeks.
