Mark Melancon picked up his 12th save with a scoreless ninth inning as the Pirates downed the Marlins 5-2 on Wednesday.

Melancon saw the tying run step to the plate with two outs as a result of Jung-Ho Kang's fielding error and an Adeiny Hechavarria single, but he got Ichiro Suzuki to ground out to end the game. Despite early-season struggles and continued low velocity, Melancon has been getting the job done for the Pirates. He has allowed a run just once in his last 15 appearances and is now 12-for-13 in save chances with a 2.86 ERA and an 11/5 K/BB ratio in 22 innings.

Brad Hand blanked the Pirates over five innings of work but took a no-decision as the Marlins lost on Wednesday.

Hand allowed only four hits, issued no walks, and struck out two in the effort. Only one of the hits went for extra bases. The lefty was moved from the bullpen to make a spot start as the Marlins are dealing with a rash of injuries in their starting rotation. Hand has a 4.50 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP and a 20/6 K/BB ratio in 28 innings. If the Marlins call on him to start again, he would do so at home against the Cubs.

Christian Yelich homered in losing effort against the Pirates on Wednesday.

Yelich went 1-for-4 on the afternoon. His seventh-inning solo shot pushed the Marlins' lead to 2-0 at the time. It marked his second of the year. Yelich has struggled since coming off of the disabled list earlier this month, batting .209/.281/.282 overall with eight RBI.
May 27 - 3:21 PM

Dee Gordon went 3-for-4 with his 19th stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the Pirates.

Martin Prado and Giancarlo Stanton, batting second and third behind Gordon, combined to go 0-for-8 with four strikeouts, helping waste Gordon's productive day. He has hit consecutively in six games and continues to lead the league in average (.376) and stolen bases.

Carlos Carrasco pitched eight innings of one-run ball and struck out eight as the Indians crushed the Rangers 12-3 on Wednesday.

It can be hard to see how Carrasco still has a 4.24 ERA with his 66/13 K/BB ratio and just five homers allowed in 57 1/3 innings, but then one remembers just how bad the Indians defense is and it's a bit easier to figure out.
May 27 - 3:18 PM

Gerrit Cole held the Marlins to two runs over seven innings, earning the win on Wednesday.

Both runs scored on solo home runs from Justin Bour and Christian Yelich. Cole was in line for the loss until the Pirates rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh. The right-hander allowed seven hits overall while walking none and striking out seven. Cole has allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his 10 starts and is now 7-2 with a 2.11 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and a 70/14 K/BB ratio in 64 innings. His next start will come on the road against the Giants.
May 27 - 3:17 PM

Colby Lewis was torched for 10 runs -- nine earned -- and 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings by the Indians on Wednesday.

Lewis has given up 19 earned runs in his last three starts after allowing a total of 12 in his first seven outings, causing his ERA to jump all of the way from 2.40 to 4.70. We'd be surprised if he finished the year under 4.00.
May 27 - 3:15 PM

Lonnie Chisenhall finished 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBI Wednesday versus the Rangers.

Chisenhall has been a big disappointment, but there's still plenty of time for him to turn it around. Fortunately for him, the Indians don't have anyone else they want to break in at third base.
