Nick Martinez has won the fifth spot in the Rangers' rotation.

The news was expected and was officially announced by manager Jeff Banister on Sunday. Martinez posted an ordinary 4.55 ERA with just 77 strikeouts over 140 1/3 innings last season but boasts a 0.84 ERA this spring. He's not recommended for fantasy purposes.

Blue Jays claimed 1B Andy Wilkins off waivers from the White Sox; optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo.

Wilkins is coming off a big season at Triple-A, having batted .293 with 30 homers and an .896 OPS across 127 games. He could eventually be in the mix for at-bats with the Blue Jays between first base and designated hitter.

David Hale (oblique) will play catch from 90 feet Sunday.

Hale was scratched from an outing last week due to a strained oblique. While he says he's not feeling any pain, it's not clear when he'll be cleared to throw off a mound. Hale will almost surely begin the season on the disabled list.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that it "seems doubtful" Garrett Richards (knee) will be ready on April 14 when the Angels first need a fifth starter.

Richards was thrilled with how he felt during an appearance in a minor league game Saturday, but the Angels are understandably proceeding very cautiously with the young right-hander. DiGiovanna expects Richards to be ready "soon after" April 14. The Halos will go with four starters early on, with Andrew Heaney or Nick Tropeano looking likely to get the ball on April 14.

Taijuan Walker has won the fifth spot in the Mariners' rotation.

It was a mere formality at this point but became official when Roenis Elias was optioned to Triple-A Sunday. Walker has been unscored upon over 18 frames while boasting a 19/4 K/BB ratio. The Mariners will monitor his innings this season, but the young right-hander makes for an intriguing mid- to late-round gamble in fantasy leagues.
Mar 29 - 1:26 PM

Mariners optioned LHP Roenis Elias to Triple-A Tacoma; re-assigned RHPs Mark Lowe, Jordan Pries, Mumba Rivera and Kevin Correia, LHP Joe Saunders, OFs Shawn O'Malley and Endy Chavez and C John Baker to minor league camp.

Elias getting sent down means Taijuan Walker has officially won the fifth starter spot, although the M's reportedly could use a modified six-man rotation. The left-hander struggled this spring with a 6.75 ERA over 14 2/3 innings.

Josh Reddick (oblique) will play five innings in a minor league game Sunday.

Reddick won't be ready for Opening Day but continues to move in the right direction as he recovers from a straight oblique. The A's figure to backdate a DL move with him, so Reddick could miss minimal time.
Mar 29 - 1:14 PM

The Phillies have named Cole Hamels their Opening Day starter.

Now there's a shocker (not really). Hamels holds a 5.17 ERA this spring, but obviously zero stock should be placed into that. The lefty could struggle for wins on the rebuilding Phillies, but he's a good bet to be traded at some point before the deadline.
