FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal writes that the odds of the Pirates trading Andrew McCutchen before next month's deadline are "good."

The Pirates shopped McCutchen heavily last winter and they seem likely to do so again even if they climb back into the playoff hunt. While the former MVP got off to a painfully slow start this season, he's been one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the last month with a .396/.486/.736 line and eight homers across his last 26 games. The Pirates holds an affordable $14.5 million club option on McCutchen for 2018. 'Cutch will turn 31 in October.

Twins designated RHP Alex Wimmers for assignment.

Wimmer holds a 4.76 ERA, 2.11 WHIP and 6/5 K/BB ratio during his multiple stints in the majors. He figures to clear waivers.

Twins designated LHP Mason Melotakis for assignment.

Melotakis, who turns 26 next week, holds a 2.28 ERA and 32/9 K/BB ratio over 27 2/3 relief innings between Double- and Triple-A this season. As a lefty who sits in the mid-90s and who boasts good minor league numbers as a reliever, he should draw interest on waivers.

Twins purchased the contract of RHP Trevor Hildenberger from Triple-A Rochester.

The sidearmer holds a 2.05 ERA over 21 relief outings for Rochester this season. Hildenberger will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.

Twins purchased the contract of RHP Dillon Gee from Triple-A Rochester.

Gee is already getting promoted even though he'd yet to make an appearance for the Twins in the minors after being signed earlier this week. The 31-year-old appears set for a long relief role for now, but it's possible he could eventually make some starts.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that Johnny Cueto plans to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract after the season.

It's been a disappointing season for Cueto, as he's posted a 4.42 ERA over 15 starts. However, as long as he finishes the year healthy it makes sense that he'd opt out of the four years and $84 million he has remaining on his deal after this season. Even at 31 years old, he'd surely land a bigger contract than that as a free agent. Heyman does add that Cueto "would listen to any extension offer" from the club, but the Giants "don’t seem inclined to do that." Given their aging roster and multitude of long-term contracts, the Giants might be in favor of Cueto opting out.

Charlie Morton (lat) allowed one run over two innings of work in his first rehab start with Triple-A Fresno on Thursday.

Morton surrendered two hits and a walk while recording one strikeout. Obviously, he's going to need to build up his pitch count more before rejoining the Astros' rotation, so expect him to make at least a couple more rehab starts.

Bud Norris (knee) is expected to resume a throwing program in the next couple days.

Norris was placed on the disabled list earlier this week with a right knee issue that has bothered him for nearly a month. The hope is that he'll be ready for activation from the DL when first eligible on June 29, and he seems likely to get his closer job back at that time.
