Braves claimed LHP Dario Alvarez off waivers from the Mets.

Alvarez was designated for assignment by New York on May 23 to open up a 40-man roster spot for utilityman Ty Kelly. The left-hander had a brutal 9.98 ERA over 17 appearances this season at the Triple-A level. It's a "why not?" situation for Atlanta.

Rays optioned INF Tim Beckham to Triple-A Durham.

Beckham was batting just .185/.241/.352 over 58 plate appearances as a utility infielder in Tampa Bay. The 26-year-old former top prospect shouldn't be owed in any standard fantasy league as he heads to Triple-A.

Indians OF prospect Bradley Zimmer ripped three hits Tuesday in a win for Double-A Akron.

He finished a double shy of the cycle while matching a season-high with four RBI. The former first-round pick has shown a nice blend of speed and power this year. He's tied for fourth in the Eastern League with 17 steals and is also fourth in RBI with 33. Unfortunately he's been plagued by a low batting average (.247) and huge strikeout totals (54 punch-outs in 150 at-bats). Zimmer has an intriguing skill set but he's not polished enough for the big leagues yet.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that Jonny Gomes has decided to retire from baseball.

Gomes left the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan on May 11 "by mutual consent" after batting just .169/.280/.246 with 22 strikeouts in 75 plate appearances. The 35-year-old outfielder finishes his playing career with 835 major league hits and 162 major league homers. He played for the Rays, Reds, Nationals, Athletics, Red Sox, Braves, and Royals during his 13-year career, earning World Series rings with Boston and Kansas City.
May 25 - 3:21 PM

Francisco Cervelli is out again Wednesday.

It's the second day off in a row for Cervelli, who's batting .193/.277/.211 in 16 games this month. He signed a three-year, $31 million contract extension with the Pirates on May 17. Chris Stewart will start at catcher and bat eighth versus the Diamondbacks.
May 25 - 3:15 PM

Pirates RHP prospect Yeudy Garcia spanned six shutout innings Tuesday in a win for High-A Bradenton.

He scattered two hits and three walks while matching a season-high with six strikeouts. 49 of the right-hander's 83 pitches went for strikes. Garcia had been winless in his previous eight starts despite a respectable 3.62 ERA over 32 1/3 innings. Jupiter's first hit Tuesday didn't come until the sixth inning. The 23-year-old made a concerted effort to throw more changeups and sliders and the result was his best outing of 2016. Look for him to stick with that approach moving forward.

Travis Shaw (hand) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup Wednesday versus the Rockies.

Shaw sat out Tuesday with a minor left hand injury. It was probably just soreness. He will start at third base and bat seventh against Colorado righty Chad Bettis.
May 25 - 3:10 PM

Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder, groin) threw four scoreless innings Wednesday for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

It was the third rehab start for Ryu, who remains on track for a mid-June season debut. The left-hander struck out three, walked none, and scattered five hits over his four shutout frames. He induced a ton of groundballs, which is usually a positive sign that his stuff is working. Ryu and his 3.17 career major league ERA are worth stashing in all mixed fantasy leagues.
