White Sox and Padres are reportedly engaged in trade talks surrounding RHP James Shields.

According to sources, these talks have "energy" and could lead to the right-hander moving to the Midwest to help the White Sox's starting rotation. Shields knows the AL Central well, pitching for the Royals in 2013 and 2014, but has seen his stuff decline the past two years. His 3.06 ERA is likely attractive to the White Sox; however, his velocity is down and his 3.88 FIP suggests he's more of a mid-rotation starter than an impact arm at this point in his career.

Salvador Perez suffered a quad contusion after a scary collision with third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert on Saturday.

It's unclear if Perez will avoid a trip to the disabled list, but this is nonetheless promising news for the Royals, as it appeared in real-time that the 26-year-old catcher suffered a significant knee injury. Now it's just a matter of determining the length of his absence. Perez is hitting .277/.313/.494 with seven home runs and 25 RBI in 176 plate appearances in 2016.

Pirates optioned LHP Kyle Lobstein to Triple-A Indianapolis.

With Tony Watson returning from the paternity list, Lobstein returns to Triple-A. The 26-year-old southpaw has struggled at the big-league level this year, compiling a 4.79 ERA with a 14/10 K/BB in 20.2 innings.

Pirates re-instated LHP Tony Watson from the paternity leave list.

Watson welcomed a new son, Theodore, to the world this week. The 30-year-old reliever has been one of the steadiest middle relievers in the game in recent years. He owns a 2.18 ERA in 20 appearances.

Salvador Perez was helped off the field with an apparent injury to his left knee after colliding with Cheslor Cuthbert.

The Royals had already been snakebitten by injury in 2016, but this could spell disaster for the defending World Champs. Perez was hitting .277/.313/.494 with seven homers when he left Saturday's game. Keep tabs on this, as it appeared to be an injury that could force the 26-year-old catcher to miss significant time.

Jurickson Profar will bat in the lead-off role in Saturday's contest against the Pirates.

Profar was hitting .284/.356/.426 in Triple-A Round Rock, so it's hardly a stretch to see him succeeding in the lead-off role in the majors. This placement in the lineup illustrates the Rangers' faith (as well as the faith fantasy owners should have) in the 23-year-old, even if his stay in the big leagues is likely to be short.

Dexter Fowler blasted a leadoff home run on Saturday, sparking the Cubs offense in a 4-1 victory over the Phillies.

Fowler's leadoff shot came off Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff. It was Fowler's lone hit in four at-bats on the afternoon, bringing his season slash to .316/.429/.540 with six homers and 24 RBI.

Kyle Hendricks logged his second career complete game in Saturday's one-run, five-hit domination of the Phillies.

Hendricks struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in the ballgame. He made a bid for his first career shutout, until Freddy Galvis doubled, advanced on a ground ball and stole home in the ninth inning. Now 3-4 on the season, he'll carry a terrific 2.93 ERA and 0.96 WHIP into Thursday's start against the Nationals.
