Free agent CB Drayton Florence is plotting a comeback at age 34.
Florence had a solid 2013 season with the Panthers, but flamed out in Lions camp in 2014 and spent last season out of football. He announced his retirement in April, but got the "itch" again. Florence turns 35 later this year.
Titans waived/released C Fernando Velasco, LB Nate Askew, CB Will Brown, LB Dezmond Johnson, WR Tebucky Jones, WR Deon Long, DE Derrick Lott, OG Justin McCray, K Mike Meyer, and OLB Chaz Sutton.
Signed in June, Velasco never came close to putting heat on starting C Brian Schwenke, and also didn't threaten for ousted LG Andy Levitre's open job.
Coach Gary Kubiak suggested the Broncos were expecting more year-two development from WR Cody Latimer.
Keep in mind these comments were made before Latimer's rough third preseason game where he dropped an easy TD and frustrated Peyton Manning by running the wrong route. Teammate Demaryius Thomas hinted Latimer is showing up in practice, but it's not translating to games. "You just want to see him making plays," said Kubiak. "He's a hard worker. He does the right thing. He's in the right place, but it's time for him to start making plays on the ball, coming up with big plays."
Devin Funchess (hamstring) returned to Panthers practice on Sunday.
Funchess resumed practicing last week, but sat out Carolina's third preseason as a precaution by a team that already lost Kelvin Benjamin to I.R. The Panthers are counting on more than expected from Funchess and can't risk a pre-season injury aggravation. It'll be interesting to see whether the Panthers let Funchess play in their preseason finale. That game is Thursday night.
Browns coach Mike Pettine confirmed Sunday that Duke Johnson was concussed in Saturday night's preseason game.
"No update," Pettine said. "He will be in the league’s concussion protocol. We’ll know more when the week goes on." Johnson missed much of camp with a hamstring injury and is now already back on the shelf. Also nicked up frequently at Miami (FL), Johnson is trending in the wrong direction for fantasy owners who had hopes he might assume a legit feature back job in Cleveland.
Panthers waived/released TE Dallas Walker, WR Avius Capers, WR Paul Browning, DE Steve Miller, LB Kevin Reddick, FB Lee Ward, and P Matt Pile.
The majority of these players were just practice fodder for the early preseason games and training camp. Walker is a former UDFA out of Western Michigan with big-time athleticism, but has now been cut by three different teams.
The Giants are hosting free agent S Stevie Brown on Sunday.
Brown should be signed quickly if he passes his physical. The Giants are desperate at safety and have familiarity with Brown, who spent the last three seasons with the organization before a failed recent stint with the Texans.
Second-round NT Eddie Goldman suffered a concussion in Saturday's preseason game against the Bengals.
The injury occurred on a five-yard run by Jeremy Hill to start the second quarter. Goldman was the favorite to start at nose tackle during Jeremiah Ratliff's three-game suspension but now it's unclear if he'll be ready for the start of the season. Ratliff hurt his left ankle Saturday and left the stadium on crutches. Terry Williams is next up on the depth chart at nose tackle.
