Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and a double as the Cubs beat the Brewers 5-2 on Thursday.

The Brewers were up 2-0 when Rizzo delivered his big blow in the eighth. The Cubs then added two runs in the ninth as insurance. Rizzo has homered in back-to-back games, so maybe his lengthy slump is coming to an end. He had just one homer in five weeks prior to yesterday.

Hector Rondon recorded his second save in two days Thursday with a perfect ninth against the Brewers.

It looks like the closing gig is Rondon's again, which begs the question of why he was ever lifted from the spot in the first place. He could be a top-10 closer the rest of the way.

Jimmy Nelson pitched seven shutout innings for the second straight start Thursday in a no-decision against the Cubs.

This one was better than last week's, in which he allowed five hits and struck out five. Tonight, he allowed just two hits and struck out eight. It's certainly encouraging for the Brewers that Nelson is in the midst of a second-half surge, but we're still not sure he has a lot to offer mixed leaguers, especially with runs and wins becoming tougher to come by.

Eddie Rosario missed the cycle by a single, knocked in three runs and scored three runs Thursday as the Twins beat the Mariners 9-5.

Rosario was hitting .272/.296/.396 a week ago. Eight extra-base hits in five games have changed that in a hurry, pushing him up to .294/.316/.462. One would think his lack of plate discipline will catch up to him at some point, but even if that happens, his defense in left field will help him stay in the lineup.

J.A. Happ was lifted after giving up seven runs -- six earned -- in 3 1/3 innings Thursday against the Twins.

Happ should be pretty much done as a starter after this. It's just too bad Vidal Nuno can't replace him right now, since he's not stretched out at all. Happ is 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA, and the Mariners have lost 10 of his last 11 starts.
Jul 31 - 1:16 AM

Aaron Hicks went 3-for-4 with a homer and a walk from the two hole Thursday against the Mariners.

The Twins never would have asked for this much from Hicks, but they're getting it. He's had multiple hits in five straight games, raising his average from .259 to .299. If the Twins keeps batting him second, he might even offer some mixed-league value down the stretch.
Jul 31 - 1:14 AM

Austin Jackson homered, doubled and walked versus the Twins on Thursday.

Jackson has been quite the bust offensively in his Mariners career, but at least he's had a bit to offer fantasy leaguers these last two months (.267 average, four homers, five steals) than he did previously. It's just not quite enough to give him mixed-league value.
Jul 31 - 1:12 AM

Jason Castro hit a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth as the Astros topped the Angels 3-0 on Thursday.

Castro was making his first start of the series. The big blast gave him his first RBI since July 3, his first homer since June 12 and his first three-RBI game since last year. Hank Conger probably deserves to keep starting two out of every three games for now, but if Castro does pick it up offensively, it's no secret that the Astros prefer his defense behind the plate.
