Cardinals placed C Yadier Molina on the 15-day disabled list with a right thumb injury.

Molina has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his thumb and will undergo surgery on Friday. He's expected to miss 8-12 weeks, which could put him out of the mix for the rest of the regular season. The Cardinals figure to look outside of the organization for insurance behind the plate.

Victor Martinez (side) is out of the Tigers' lineup again Thursday.

V-Mart hasn't played since leaving last Friday's game with soreness in his side. He appears unlikely to play again before the All-Star break.

Rangers recalled RHP Matt West from Triple-A Round Rock.

West, 25, owns a 3.13 ERA and 38/10 K/BB ratio in 37 1/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A this season. He'll pitch in middle relief.
Jul 10 - 4:25 PM

Rangers optioned RHP Phil Irwin to Triple-A Round Rock.

Irwin started in place of Nick Martinez (side) on Tuesday and allowed three runs over four innings against the Astros. The Rangers have called up Matt West to take his place on the active roster.
Jul 10 - 4:22 PM

Brandon Phillips has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his left thumb and will undergo surgery.

A brutal day for two teams in the National League Central. Similar to Yadier Molina, Phillips will likely be sidelined for 8-12 weeks. Ramon Santiago figures to fill in at second base for now, but the Reds will likely look to the trade market as they attempt to make due without him.
Jul 10 - 4:15 PM

Yankees recalled INF Yangervis Solarte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Solarte was demoted a week ago, but he's back now that Carlos Beltran has been placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list. The 26-year-old is batting .260/.343/.393 over 71 games with the Yankees this season, but his production has dropped sharply since May.
Jul 10 - 4:01 PM

Yadier Molina has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right thumb and will undergo surgery.

Molina is among the most irreplaceable players in baseball, and now the second-place Cardinals are likely going to be without him for the remainder of the 2014 regular season. Tony Cruz is starting at catcher in St. Louis on Thursday night against the Pirates, but the Cards might need to go shopping for an upgrade. Molina suffered the torn ligament Wednesday on an awkward slide into third base.
Jul 10 - 3:50 PM

Yankees placed DH Carlos Beltran on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Beltran suffered multiple facial fractures (and a concussion) when he was struck in the face by a tipped batting practice ball on Wednesday night. He reported feeling better a few hours after the injury and will aim to return to the Yankees right after the All-Star break.
