Asdrubal Cabrera (back) remained out of the Indians' lineup Wednesday.

He's missed the last two games after exiting Monday's contest with back spasms. The Indians have called up Jose Ramirez to provide protection for Cabrera, who is considered day-to-day.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports that the Marlins "remain interested" in Jim Johnson.

The Marlins nearly completed a deal for Johnson last month before opting for Bryan Morris instead. However, it appears they haven't given up on acquiring the struggling former closer, with Spencer saying the club has discussed sending pitching prospect Adam Conley to Oakland for the reliever. Johnson holds a 6.25 ERA with 23 walks in 40 innings this season and is making $10 million. The A's will have to pick up the bulk of the remainder of his contract in any trade.

Indians optioned LHP T.J. House to Triple-A Columbus.

That means Danny Salazar will stick around, at least until Justin Masterson (knee) returns. House holds a 4.50 ERA over 50 innings this season and isn't guaranteed any more starts with the big club.

Indians recalled INF Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Columbus.

Ramirez will provide some infield depth with Asdrubal Cabrera (back) banged up. He's hit just .080 (2-for-25) during his time with the Indians this season.

Eric Hosmer (hand) isn't expected to return to the Royals' lineup until at least Thursday.

Hosmer missed a second straight game Tuesday with a bruised right hand, and he's expected to sit out Wednesday, as well. The first baseman suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch Sunday and the Royals don't want the ailment to linger. "That’s why I’m hoping this doesn’t linger," manager Ned Yost said. "Give him a couple days now. It might save him. Instead of battling through it, and it affecting him for three weeks, instead of a week. Get it to where it’s manageable."

Carlos Beltran played catch Monday as the Yankees plan to ease him back into outfield duty.

Beltran has been limited to the designated hitter spot since early June due to a bone spur in his right elbow. "He played catch yesterday. I think he’ll probably play two days in a row and then take a day off," manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday. "We’re trying to get him out there." Beltran has been heating up a bit at the plate with three multi-hit games in his last five tries and a pair of homers over his last nine contests.

CSN Chicago's Patrick Mooney reports that the Cubs have had internal discussions about moving third base prospect Kris Bryant to right field.

Bryant is, at best, an adequate defensive third baseman, but the Cubs are content to leave him there for now. However, a position switch to right field could eventually come. "He can do it," general manager Jed Hoyer said of moving Bryant to the outfield. "He played center in college, and he’s played right. He feels good out there. The biggest focus for him right now is he’s working on his defense. He is almost 6-6, and with that the fundamentals of playing third base are more challenging. In the future, I would never say never that we wouldn’t put him out there. But right now, our focus is third."

The Twins are expected to recall Logan Darnell from Triple-A Rochester to start on Saturday versus the White Sox.

Kris Johnson was sent down after Monday's start, so the Twins need another arm for this weekend. Darnell tossed three perfect relief innings earlier this season for Minnesota and holds a 3.43 ERA over 17 Triple-A starts this year. The 25-year-old can be ignored for fantasy purposes.
