Cubs pitching prospect C.J. Edwards (shoulder) is expected to return to Double-A Tennessee this week.

Edwards made a successful rehab start on Monday for rookie-level Mesa and will now rejoin the rotation at Tennessee. The right-hander had a 2.61 ERA, 1.065 WHIP, and 20/8 K/BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings for the Smokies before his shoulder began bothering him in late April. He should make it to Chicago sometime in 2015.

Cubs placed RHP Neil Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right triceps muscle.

Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Iowa last week, but that has now been voided because of this triceps injury. The 25-year-old right-hander has registered a brilliant 0.96 ERA and 36/10 K/BB ratio in 28 innings of relief this season out of the Chicago bullpen.

Oswaldo Arcia is not with the Twins on Tuesday night due the birth of his son.

Arcia is expected to return on Wednesday, so the Twins won't bother putting him on paternity leave.
Jul 29 - 5:35 PM

Ricky Nolasco (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon.

Nolasco has another bullpen session scheduled for Thursday and will probably throw another few after that before being cleared for a minor league rehab start. The right-hander has been out since July 7 with an elbow injury. He's on track to return in mid-August.
Jul 29 - 5:27 PM

Matt Cain has scheduled a visit with Dr. James Andrews.

That's usually not good news. Cain has failed to make any progress in his rehabilitation from right elbow inflammation and may now be facing surgery. The right-hander could be done for the year no matter what.
Jul 29 - 5:15 PM

Ryan Hanigan (oblique) won't begin a minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday.

Hanigan has some lingering soreness in his oblique, so the Rays will push his rehab stint back a couple of days. He's still on track to be activated in early August. The catcher has been on the shelf since July 9.
Jul 29 - 5:10 PM

Giants optioned 1B Adam Duvall to Triple-A Fresno.

Duvall hit a two-run homer off Cliff Lee in his first game following his recall from Triple-A, but struggled after that. He was removed from the 25-man roster on Tuesday to open up a spot for Travis Ishikawa.
Jul 29 - 5:08 PM

Giants designated INF Tony Abreu for assignment.

Abreu was only up in the majors for a couple of days and didn't manage a hit in four plate appearances.
