Matt Wieters will start at catcher Thursday against the Astros.

That's only significant because it's his third consecutive start behind the plate. Wieters hasn't started three games in a row at catcher since April of 2014. That means Wieters is almost certain to get the night off Friday against Cleveland. Caleb Joseph would start in his place.

Orioles released RHP Eric Fornataro.

He signed a minor league deal with Baltimore in April but only stuck for about six weeks. Fornataro posted an ugly 8.10 ERA in 10 appearances for Double-A Bowie before getting axed. The 28-year-old made eight appearances for the Cardinals in 2014 but hasn't been to the majors since.

Jung Ho Kang went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI as the Pirates topped the Diamondbacks 8-3 on Thursday.

It's Kang's first three-hit game since he came off the disabled list three weeks ago. He's been dealing with a little hand injury, which is why today's start was just his second in five days. He's hitting .298 with five homers and 15 RBI in 47 at-bats.

Jackie Bradley Jr. will hit leadoff for the Red Sox Thursday against the Rockies.

Don't get too excited. Manager John Farrell said he plans to move Bradley down in the order when Mookie Betts returns to the lineup on Friday. JBJ hasn't hit leadoff since his rookie year in 2013. The current AL batting average leader has spent most of the year hitting ninth, which speaks volumes about the Red Sox's lineup.

Despite allowing just an unearned run over five innings and hitting a three-run homer, Gerrit Cole didn't factor into the decision in Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks.

That's because A.J. Schugel gave up two runs in the sixth, tying the game at 3-3. Cole could have pitched that inning himself if he hadn't been so inefficient on the mound; he walked three and threw 105 pitches to get his 15 outs. He did have a great day at the plate, though. Not only did he collect his second big-league homer, but he doubled in his other at-bat.
May 26 - 4:41 PM

Patrick Corbin fell to 2-4 after giving up five runs -- four earned -- in 5 2/3 innings Thursday against the Pirates.

Corbin's big mistake was the pitch on which Gerrit Cole hit a three-run homer. Had Cole bunted in that situation, as a lot of pitchers would have, Corbin's day could have turned out a whole lot better. As is, it was another less-than-stellar outing from the disappointing left-hander. He's not worth playing in mixed leagues with the Astros and Cubs next up on the schedule.
May 26 - 4:39 PM

Jean Segura went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored Thursday against the Pirates.

Segura's OPS has declined steadily since his outstanding first week of the season, but even so, he's remained a solid leadoff hitter for the Diamondbacks. He's hit .299 with a .330 OBP in May after coming in at .333 with a .362 OBP in April. Of course, as rarely as he walks, he needs to keep his average up around .300 to be useful at the top of the order.
May 26 - 4:36 PM

Jose Fernandez pitched seven innings of one-run ball and struck out 12 in defeating the Rays on Thursday.

Fernandez isn't going toe-to-toe with Clayton Kershaw and Jake Arrieta in the ERA department, but when it comes to strikeouts, no one is matching him. He has fanned 43 batters in his last four starts and 90 batters in 60 2/3 innings for the year.
