ESPN Texans reporter Tania Ganguli observes third-round TE C.J. Fiedorowicz "can do everything."

"Zero problems catching the ball," Ganguli added. The Texans and Broncos are holding joint practices this week, and Fiedorowicz is continuing to line up as the starting in-line tight end and getting red-zone work. He's already an NFL-ready blocker and drew comparisons to Rob Gronkowski coming out of Iowa. Coach Bill O'Brien plans to feature his tight ends. Fiedorowicz might be a waiver-wire favorite at some point this season. He's not yet worth drafting in standard-sized leagues.

Michael Crabtree admitted he wasn't healthy or himself in the eight games he played last season after returning from a torn Achilles'.

"I was fast enough to be on the field," Crabtree said. "But I wasn't me." Crabtree revealed last week that his weight ballooned up to 230 pounds last season. He's back in shape, and says he "can't wait to get out there" this year. Crabtree is a big-time blow-up candidate as the 49ers' clear No. 1 receiver and Colin Kaepernick's go-to guy. There's value in his late-fourth-round ADP.

Lions DT Nick Fairley said his "eating habits have gotten in the way the past couple weeks," and he's now up to 315 pounds.

This explains why Fairley is running with the second-team defense, instead of next to Ndamukong Suh with the starters. Fairley wants to play at 305. In fairness to Fairley, the Lions have been all over the map with where they want his playing weight. Earlier in the year, he was too light, but now he's too heavy. It should only be a matter of time before he's back with the No. 1 defense.

Second-round rookie Jarvis Landry said he's now rotating in the slot position with Brandon Gibson.

We always expected Landry to overtake Gibson and Rishard Matthews at some point this season. It's a great sign that he's pushing so hard with more than two weeks to go before Week 1. Landry isn't on the re-draft radar yet, but he could certainly find himself there before the year is up. He's an ideal slot man in the mold of Hines Ward, and Ryan Tannehill showed a penchant for targeting that position last year.

ESPN New York confirms Geno Smith will be the Jets' Week 1 starter.

The Jets haven't made an official announcement yet, but it's only a matter of time. Geno has soaked up the vast majority of first-team reps in practice, started the first two preseason games and will start on Friday night. "When the coaches say, 'First-group offense,' we know who's walking in the huddle," WR David Nelson said Tuesday. "It's not something that needs to be said. He's the guy and we're moving forward."

Bucs released WR/KR Lavelle Hawkins.

Hawkins' college connection to Bucs OC Jeff Tedford could only get him so far. The return man hasn't caught a pass in a game since 2012 while with the Titans.

Chris Thompson (ankle) will practice on a limited basis Wednesday.

The oft-injured Thompson is nearing a return from his mild ankle sprain. He's well behind Roy Helu for third-down duties and is firmly on the roster bubble.

Torrey Smith is anticipating a more versatile role this season.

The hiring of Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator will be a boon to Smith's box scores. Used too often as a one-trick deep threat through his first three NFL seasons, the speedster's new role "incorporates his ability to run deep routes as well as short to intermediate patterns." Much like the Shanahan & Son offense, the Gary Kubiak scheme is ridiculously friendly to X receivers -- as we saw with Andre Johnson in Houston. Smith is playing that spot now, is in a contract year and is one of our favorite mid-round wideout targets.
