Willson Contreras (hamstring) played catch Friday.

It's his first bit of baseball activity since he landed on the disabled list a week ago with a strained right hamstring. Obviously, running is going to be the biggest test for Contreras, and he's unlikely to be cleared for that anytime soon. The young catcher is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-September.

Kendrys Morales is not in the Blue Jays' lineup Friday.

He might be limited to pinch-hitting duties this weekend with the Jays at Wrigley field for an interleague series. Given that Morales is in a 3-for-30 funk at the plate, a little break might be good for him.

Alex Cobb (toe) could rejoin the Rays' rotation as soon as Tuesday versus the Blue Jays.

Cobb threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and is slated for another one Saturday. Assuming that goes well, he'll be cleared to rejoin the Rays' rotation. The veteran right-hander has missed the last two weeks with turf toe in his right big toe.

Kyle Schwarber is not in the Cubs' lineup Friday.

He'll take a seat with the Blue Jays throwing lefty J.A. Happ. Ben Zobrist is in left field and Ian Happ is at second base.

Brewers signed OF Quintin Berry to a minor league contract.

Berry had been playing for the independent league Long Island Ducks after the Twins released him back in May. He's been assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs and could be a pinch-running option for the Brew Crew next month.

Tony Sipp (calf) is on track to begin a rehab assignment "toward end of homestand," on August 24, according to Astros manager A.J. Hinch.

Sipp has been out all month with a sore left calf. He could potentially make it back before the end of August.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that he was "a little curious" why Joe Jimenez's velocity was down in his last appearance Wednesday.

Jimenez was sitting at 93 mph against the Rangers, down from the mid- to high-90s that he usually throws. He was charged with three runs -- two earned -- over just one-third of an inning in the appearance. The Tigers and Jimenez insist the reliever is healthy, although it will be interesting to track his velocity moving forward. Jimenez is viewed as the team's closer of the future, but he's posted a 12.54 ERA over 11 appearances in the majors and now is having velocity issues. That, combined with Shane Greene pitching well, probably means it's safe for those stashing Jimenez in deeper formats to go ahead and drop him.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Thursday that Odubel Herrera (hamstring) "might have to go on the DL."

"We’re thinking a lot about it," the skipper added. Herrera missed a third straight game Thursday with a strained left hamstring and he hasn't recovered as quickly as hoped. The injury comes at a poor time for Herrera's fantasy owners, as he's been one of the hottest hitters in baseball with a .379/.431/.636 line during his current 17-game hitting streak.
