Brett Lawrie (finger) has begun hitting off a tee but has yet to face live pitching.

It's not clear when he'll be cleared for batting practice. Lawrie needs to go out on a rehab assignment before returning and the expectation is that he's still at least a couple weeks away from a return. He's been on the shelf since late June with a fractured right index finger.

Adam Lind (foot) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Thursday.

However, the Blue Jays could decide to wait until they begin a homestand on August 5. "He's running, he's still a little bit hobbled, but he's able to do a bit of everything," manager John Gibbons said of Lind, who has been sidelined since early July with a non-displaced fracture in his right foot.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Monday that "if I was to say right now," Brandon Morrow (finger) will "probably be a reliever" when he returns.

"But by then, you never know what we're looking at anyways," Gibbons added. "We may need a starter, we don't know as a team where we're going to be at that point." Morrow has resumed throwing from a mound, but Gibbons said the righty is not yet "cutting it loose." The Jays are hoping to get him back in September.

Michael Pineda (back) will throw three innings or 45 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday.

It's not clear what the next step will be after that, but Pineda beginning a rehab assignment would seem to be plausible. The Yankees are hoping to get the big right-hander back in their rotation in mid-August. Pineda has been out since late April with a strained muscle in upper back.

Jon Singleton has been working with hitting coach John Mallee on shortening his swing.

Mallee said the results so far have been "absolutely amazing" and Singleton just has to trust his new swing in game action. "I'm trying to get better each and every day," Singleton said. "I'm trying to make small adjustments and trying to adjust to what they throw me and stuff like that and trying to time the ball better. Nothing too major. Just daily adjustments." Singleton has homered seven times but is batting just .178 in 163 at-bats with the big club.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Monday that the club may schedule a private workout with Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo.

"He's definitely an interesting player," Luhnow said. Castillo had a showcase for 28 teams on Saturday and has private workouts scheduled with the Phillies and Red Sox, with the Orioles and Yankees also expected to have a one-on-one workout. Baseball America's Ben Badler has listed, in addition to the aforementioned clubs, the White Sox, Mariners, Giants, Blue Jays, Cubs and Braves as potential suitors. There's speculation that Castillo could receive a contract similar to Yasiel Puig's $42 million deal.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Diamondbacks are telling teams that "they'd talk" about trading Addison Reed.

It's not clear at this point whether they've had any real discussions with other teams, but it appears they're at least willing to entertain the possibility of a deal. Reed has had an up-and-down season for the D'Backs but his numbers overall (3.89 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 47/11 K/BB ratio over 41 2/3 innings) have been pretty good. He'll be eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter. Stark also notes that the D'Backs are listening on Aaron Hill, Oliver Perez and, "for the right offer," Martin Prado and Josh Collmenter. They're expected to hang on to Brad Ziegler.

WEEI.com's Rob Bradford reports that the Red Sox are "not looking to trade for" Matt Kemp at the moment.

ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes reported Sunday that the Sox were considering a run at Kemp, possibly as part of a package that would send Jon Lester to the Dodgers. Bradford, though, is hearing otherwise. The Mariners are known to have interest in Kemp, but Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan said Sunday that he's more of a backup plan for them at this time. The Dodgers will have to eat a big portion of the $107 million Kemp is owed after this season in order to make a deal happen.
