Mark Melancon earned his first save of the season Wednesday as the Pirates defeated the Cubs.

Jason Grilli threw 35 pitches on Tuesday night and was unavailable on Wednesday, so Melancon filled in and was able to convert. That setup man and closer combo has been excellent all season for the Pirates.

Phillies optioned RHP Phillippe Aumont to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Aumont struck out 15 over 13 innings but also posted a 4.15 ERA and 2.08 WHIP over 16 appearances. The Phillies will make a corresponding roster move prior to Friday's game.

C.J. Wilson allowed just one run over eight innings of the Angels' 7-1 win over the Mariners on Wednesday.

Wilson had pitched well in three losses prior to Wednesday's start, so he took matters into his own hands against the Mariners. Wilson struck out 10 batters in his eight innings, and he now owns a 3.39 ERA through 10 starts. He'll get another turn Monday against the Dodgers.

Jeff Samardzija held the Pirates to one run over seven innings on Wednesday but took the loss.

Samardzija was excellent, fanning eight batters and allowing only three hits and one walk. But he got exactly zero support from the Chicago offense and thus fell to 2-6 on the year. The right-hander has an ace-like 3.25 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 72/22 K/BB ratio in 63 2/3 innings this season and should keep rolling next week against the White Sox.

Cliff Lee overwhelmed the Marlins Wednesday, going the distance while allowing just three hits, two walks and no runs while striking out five in the 3-0 win.

Lee got into trouble in the second inning with a single, walk and hit by pitch, but he pulled a Houdini act with a 5-2-3 double play followed by a pop-out. Two of the three base knows he allowed were of the infield variety, and all three were singles. The southpaw will take a nifty 2.48 ERA and 1.02 WHIP into next week's start in Boston.

Kendrys Morales went 3-for-4 with a double in the Mariners' loss to the Angels on Wednesday.

The first baseman was the only one effective against Angels' starter C.J. Wilson on Wednesday, and his line is up to .281/.362/.449 on the year. After getting his legs back under him last year in Anaheim, Morales has been relied upon in the middle of the Mariners order. He has five home runs and 21 RBI through 45 games.
May 22 - 10:04 PM

Delmon Young homered for the second straight game in Wednesday's win over the Marlins.

Young also added an infield single and a pair of runs scored. His solo shot to left field in the fourth inning got the scoring started for the Phils, and it's all the scoring Cliff Lee needed. Young is still batting just .233/.304/.450 for the season but could be heating up.
May 22 - 10:01 PM

Alberto Callaspo went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the Angels' win over the Mariners on Wednesday.

Callaspo scored twice and drove in two runs, and he's now got a .277/.330/.415 line. Against the odds, he's been one of the Angels' better hitters thus far, and he's been finding his way into the lineup more often in recent weeks.
