Cubs signed first-round pick LHP Brendon Little.

Little was selected 27th overall in last week's draft out of Manatee JC in Florida. The left-hander has a plus-plus fastball and a good curveball, but he probably needs to develop a third pitch if he's going to flourish as a starting pitcher. He got a slightly below-slot bonus of $2.2 million.

Cubs recalled RHP Dylan Floro from Triple-A Iowa.

Floro has allowed six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings this season for Chicago. The right-hander will work in a mop-up role.

Cubs purchased the contract of OF Mark Zagunis from Triple-A Iowa.

Zagunis will provide the Cubs with much-needed outfield depth with Jason Heyward landing on the disabled list Thursday due to a laceration on his hand and Kyle Schwarber getting shipped out to the minor leagues. Zagunis, 24, was batting .249/.399/.474 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 65 games this season with Iowa. He'll be making his major league debut.

Cubs placed OF Jason Heyward on the 10-day disabled list with a laceration on his right hand.

Heyward suffered the injury Sunday when he dove for a ball on the warning track and the cut still needs time to heal. Mark Zagunis has been called up from Triple-A Iowa to give the Cubs much-needed outfield depth.

Cubs optioned OF Kyle Schwarber to Triple-A Iowa.

David Kaplan of CSN Chicago was first to report the news of the demotion and now the Cubs have made it official. It should be a short stay in the minors for Schwarber, who has struggled to find consistency at the plate this season and been a negative defensively in left field. The 24-year-old is sitting on 12 homers through 64 games, but he has a weak .171/.295/.378 overall batting line.
Jun 22 - 12:03 PM

Pirates recalled C Jacob Stallings from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Stallings will give the Bucs some extra depth at catcher while Francisco Cervelli recovers from lingering post-concussion symptoms. Stallings, 27, is 2-for-7 this season at the major league level.
Jun 22 - 11:52 AM

David Kaplan of CSN Chicago reports the Cubs are sending Kyle Schwarber to Triple-A Iowa.

Kaplan says Schwarber is "not expected to be gone long" and that it's simply an "opportunity to clear his head." The 24-year-old slugger was the toast of the town after returning for last year's World Series, but he has batted just .171/.295/.378 through 64 games this season. The power numbers have been fine, but Schwarber needs to find some consistency and will try to do so against a lower level of competition.
Jun 22 - 11:47 AM

Athletics recalled 1B/OF Matt Olson from Triple-A Nashville.

Olson will give the A's some depth while Matt Chapman recovers from an infection in his left knee. Olson is 2-for-30 in his career at the major league level and 0-for-9 this year.
