Rangers designated RHP Derek Lowe for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Monday's starter, Josh Lindblom. Lowe has struggled in a mop-up role this season, posting an ugly 9.00 ERA in 13 innings. The Rangers are paying him $1.25 million in 2013.

Yan Gomes slugged two home runs -- including a 10th-inning walkoff -- in Monday's 10-8 defeat of the Mariners.

Gomes hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning and then played the hero by cranking a three-run blast in the bottom of the 10th with the Indians trailing by two. Gomes finished with four RBI and now has nine RBI in 17 games this season to go along with a cool .951 OPS. He should start seeing a bit more regular playing time.

Scott Kazmir was shelled for five earned runs over three innings Monday in a no-decision vs. Seattle.

It was Kazmir's worst start of the 2013 season. He yielded seven hits and two walks while throwing only 37 of his 63 pitches for strikes and the Mariners were able to take advantage. The left-hander showed real signs of promise earlier this month, but he can no longer be trusted in standard mixed fantasy leagues. Kazmir will carry a 6.35 ERA and 1.62 WHIP into his next outing against a good Red Sox offense.

Tom Wilhelmsen blew his first save of the season Monday in the Mariners' late loss to the Indians.

Wilhelmsen had the victory in his grasp with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but dropped an easy throw at first base that allowed Jason Kipnis to score the tying run. The Mariners marched back in the top of the 10th but the Indians one-upped Seattle in the bottom of that frame. Wilhelmsen still has a cool 0.47 ERA and 0.68 WHIP in 19 innings this season. His job is safe.

Stephen Drew (back) has returned to the starting lineup for the Red Sox on Monday.

Drew missed back-to-back games over the weekend due to back issue, but it was never a major concern. The 30-year-old is hitting .238/.336/.410 with three home runs, 18 RBI and a .746 OPS through 31 games this season.

Hisashi Iwakuma allowed five earned runs over six innings Monday in the Mariners' loss to the Indians.

Iwakuma entered the outing with an outstanding 1.84 ERA and 0.78 WHIP. By the time he was done serving up seven hits, three walks and five earned runs to the Tribe, his ERA had jumped to 2.37 and his WHIP had slid to 0.87. Iwakuma will try to bounce back next week against the Rangers. It will be a tought test for the right-hander.

Phillies purchased the contract of C Humberto Quintero from Triple-A Lehigh Valeey.

Quintero will provide depth behind the plate for Philadelphia while Carlos Ruiz recovers from his right hamstring strain. Erik Kratz will get most of the starts.

Phillies placed RHP Mike Adams on the 15-day disabled list with a right back strain.

Adams has been battling the injury for close to two weeks and the Phillies finally decided to shut him down for a bit. He's allowed to return before the end of May.
