Devin Mesoraco left Sunday's game against the Angels with a strained left quad.

Mesoraco pulled up while rounding third base on a double by teammate Brennan Boesch. It doesn't sound like the injury is serious, but should sideline the young backstop for a couple of days. At this point, it shouldn't affect his availability for Opening Day.

Marco Gonzales pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball Sunday in his start against the Mets.

This was supposed to be Jaime Garcia's start, but he was scratched due to his shoulder. Before Garcia's setback, Gonzales seemed to be essentially out of the mix for a rotation spot in the three-way battle with Carlos Martinez. He'd still be plenty intriguing if given the nod, but we imagine that Martinez is going to be the choice.

Lucas Duda went 3-for-4 with a couple of RBI against the Cardinals on Sunday.

A nice day for Duda, starting against a lefty. John Mayberry Jr. will almost certainly outproduce Duda versus southpaws this season, but the Mets will go with Duda as an everyday guy anyway, at least initially. Duda has gone 5-for-8 the last two days to lift his spring average from .129 to .231.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Sunday that Odubel Herrera will probably be the team's Opening Day center fielder.

The club has decided to move Ben Revere to left field and install the Rule 5 pick in center. Herrera batted .321/.373/.402 between High- and Double-A last season and is hitting .321 with six steals during Grapefruit League play. He's just 23 and has yet to play above Double-A, but Herrera's speed gives him a chance to make an impact in fantasy leagues right away.

Mariners outfield prospect Alex Jackson was scratched from Sunday's lineup with minor shoulder soreness.

Jackson is still feeling the effects after banging his shoulder on the ground during a diving attempt Saturday. It sounds like his removal was precautionary, so consider him day-to-day. The top prospect might begin the year in short-season ball.

Devin Mesoraco left Sunday's game against the Angels with an apparent injury.

Mesoraco pulled up when rounding third base on a Brennan Bosch double, suggesting he tweaked something in his lower half. The Reds should provide an update on his status shortly. Obviously, with Opening Day a week away it's not the best timing for the injury.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox will consider carrying Blake Swihart on the Opening Day roster if Christian Vazquez (elbow) needs Tommy John surgery.

It had been reported previously that Swihart was under consideration for a roster spot, but Heyman is the first to reveal that Vazquez might need Tommy John surgery. The longer Vazquez would be out, the better you'd have to think the chance are at Swihart cracking the roster. Vazquez is being examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday to see if he needs season-ending surgery. Swihart hit .293 with 13 home runs and 64 RBI between Double- and Triple-A last season. He'd figure to split playing time with Ryan Hanigan if on the roster.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Christian Vazquez could require Tommy John surgery after an MRI revealed damage to his right ulnar collateral ligament.

The Red Sox haven't commented on the situation, but the fact that Vazquez is being sent to Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday for a second opinion isn't a good sign. Heyman has confirmed everyone's worst fear, as Vazquez would be knocked out for the season if an operation is required. Ryan Hanigan is perfectly capable of holding down the fort, but the Red Sox are reportedly considering keeping top prospect Blake Swihart on the roster.
