Broncos placed S Justin Simmons on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season.

The Broncos let T.J. Ward go at the end of the preseason in order to get Simmons in the lineup as a full-time player. He has received strong marks for his run defense from Pro Football Focus and is the site's No. 34 overall safety out of 86 qualifiers. Simmons has been a problem in pass coverage.

Joe Mixon remains in the league's concussion protocol Wednesday.

Mixon was concussed nine days ago and missed Week 14. Giovani Bernard got the start in his absence and played 85.2% of the snaps while turning 17 touches into 130 scoreless yards. If he gets another start this week, it will be a tough road test against the Vikings' top-notch defense. Bernard will be a volume-dependent RB2, but expectations would need to be tempered.

Coach Jim Caldwell said he expects Ameer Abdullah (neck) to return Week 15 against the Bears.

"I do, as long as things keep trending in the right direction," Caldwell said. The Lions and Bears kick off the early Saturday game at 4:30 ET. Abdullah's return will make none of the Lions' running backs attractive fantasy plays.

Jaguars WLB Telvin Smith has cleared the league's concussion protocol.

Smith missed the last two games after a setback. He should be ready to return this Sunday against Houston. The Texans' implied team total of 14 points is the lowest of Week 15. Continue to ride the Jaguars' D/ST.

Allen Hurns (ankle) remains sidelined at practice Wednesday.

Hurns has been out since Week 10. In his absence, Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole have emerged as solid second and third wideouts behind Marqise Lee.
Dec 13 - 10:51 AM

Zach Ertz has cleared the league's concussion protocol and will practice Wednesday.

Ertz was said to be making steady progress late last week but was still dealing with headaches over the weekend and had to sit out the Week 14 thriller against the Rams. Trey Burton had a huge game in Ertz's absence but will be sent back to backup duties with Ertz healthy. Ertz will remain a TE1, even in the absence of Carson Wentz (knee). He gets a date against the Giants next.
Dec 13 - 10:47 AM

Leonard Fournette (quad) will not practice Wednesday.

The quad thing is a new issue for Fournette, who never seems to be 100% healthy. The rookie rebounded last week with 101 yards and a score in a home win over the Seahawks, but he'd been struggling a bit the previous month. Fournette is fighting through small nicks and bruises and ultimately should play Sunday against Houston, though it's obviously something to monitor moving forward. Remember when Fournette said the NFL was easier than college?

Dolphins CB Xavien Howard was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 14.

Howard was incredible in the Dolphins' upset win over the Patriots this past Monday night. He picked off Tom Brady twice, becoming only the second player to do so over the last 10 seasons, and Howard was simply terrific in coverage all night. Over the last three games, Pro Football Focus has charted Howard with seeing 17 targets in his coverage. He's allowed two catches for 30 yards in that span, while picking off four and swatting away four others.
