Brock Holt (arm) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored Wednesday against the Twins.

Holt hadn't played since taking a line drove off his arm on Sunday afternoon. He only suffered a bruise. The 26-year-old utilityman is batting .305/.383/.442 with 12 runs scored in 31 games this season for the Red Sox.

Collin Cowgill (hand) is headed to the disabled list.

Cowgill has been unable to hit since injuring his right hand during batting practice Sunday. There should be an exact diagnosis at some point Thursday. The 29-year-old outfielder is sporting a rough .180/.231/.295 slash line through 35 games this season for Anaheim.

Angels optioned 1B Marc Krauss to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Krauss had a couple of timely hits in his two-week stay with the Halos, but he ultimately posted a disappointing .143/.211/.286 overall batting line. This move clears a roster spot for outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who was acquired from the Mets on Wednesday.
May 28 - 8:51 AM

Grant Balfour is said to be leaning toward retirement.

Balfour opted out of his minor league contract with the Rays on Wednesday after allowing nine hits and four walks in 9 2/3 innings at Triple-A Durham. The 37-year-old right-hander is still hauling in $7 million this season from a deal signed with Tampa Bay two offseasons ago. If this is indeed it, Balfour, a native of Australia, will finish his major league career with a cool 3.49 ERA, 1.219 WHIP, and 84 saves.

Matt Adams will undergo surgery Friday to repair a torn right quadriceps muscle.

The same 3-4 month timetable holds, which could mean the rest of the season for the big first baseman. Adams tore his right quad Tuesday while legging out a double. Mark Reynolds has taken over as the Cardinals' starting first baseman and holds a good amount of mixed-league fantasy value as a power threat in a deep lineup. It's another tough blow for the Cards, and yet they have the best record and run differential in Major League Baseball.
May 28 - 8:32 AM

Jason Grilli coughed up a run in the ninth against the Dodgers on Wednesday but held on to notch his 14th save in a 3-2 win.

With one out, Grilli served up an Alex Guerrero solo homer to right. Andre Ethier next singled, but Grilli ended the affair in a timely fashion after that. It's highly questionable whether Grilli is a superior ninth inning option to Jim Johnson -- who tossed another scoreless eighth and boasts a 2.42 ERA -- but the former is 14-for-15 in save chances (ranking No. 2 in the NL in saves) and isn't in danger of losing his job at the moment. Of course, with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP, a big implosion or two could change that.
May 28 - 1:24 AM

Joc Pederson went 2-for-4 on Wednesday as the Dodgers lost to the Braves 3-2.

Pederson, 23, went 7-for-13 in the three-game set against Atlanta. He boasts a .945 OPS and is on pace for 42 homers, 81 RBI and 95 runs. The heavy frontrunner for NL Rookie of the Year honors has secured leadoff duties for the foreseeable future (and perhaps decade) by posting a .392 OBP with an outstanding walk rate.
May 28 - 1:18 AM

Alex Wood permitted just one run and struck out six over seven frames in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers.

He scattered seven hits and declined to issue a free pass. The stellar showing was good to see after Wood was scratched from his last start on Friday because of a stomach virus. He showed no ill effects here, keeping at bay a dangerous Dodgers lineup in Los Angeles. Wood has a decent 3.50 ERA, but it comes with a terrible 1.50 WHIP and only 38 strikeouts over 54 innings.
