Austin Hedges (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment in the Arizona League on Friday.

Jul 27 - 7:05 PM

Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune said teams will "monitor" Yangervis Solarte's minor league rehab assignment.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Rays have "toyed with the idea" of calling up Brent Honeywell to pitch out of the bullpen.

Jul 27 - 7:01 PM

MLB.com's Anthony DiComo said it "doesn't sound like" Dominic Smith's promotion to the major leagues is imminent.

The expectation was that Smith would be called up in short order to replace Lucas Duda. However, it looks like the Mets still aren't ready to give Smith the keys to first base, preferring to split reps between Jay Bruce and T.J. Rivera. Smith outgrew Triple-A a long time ago and has to be getting frustrated. The same could be said of top shortstop prospect Amed Rosario, who is also overdue for a promotion. We're not sure what's holding up New York's youth movement but hopefully Smith and Rosario won't have to toil in the minors for too much longer.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports the Indians have "reached out" to the Tigers in pursuit of Justin Wilson.

Talk about the rich getting richer. It would be almost unfair for the Indians to add Wilson to a bullpen already featuring Cody Allen and Andrew Miller. It makes sense though, especially with lefty specialist Boone Logan (lat) on the disabled list. Trading Wilson to a division rival surely wouldn't be the Tigers' first choice, particularly with so many other teams interested. Wilson is a near lock to be traded before Monday's deadline.

T.J. Rivera (arm) is not in the Mets' lineup Thursday against the Padres.

Rivera doesn't make many starts but his absence Thursday is significant because he could see increased playing time at first base following Lucas Duda's trade to Tampa Bay. Instead Jay Bruce will slide in at first with Curtis Granderson manning Duda's usual post in right field in Thursday night's series finale. Rivera has been dealing with a minor arm injury and should be considered day-to-day.

Rays designated OF Shane Peterson for assignment.

The Rays needed to clear a spot for Dan Jennings, who was acquired from the White Sox on Thursday. Tampa Bay will have to make another roster move Friday to accommodate new DH Lucas Duda. Peterson has hit .253 with two homers over 79 at-bats for the Rays this year. There's a good chance he'll remain in the organization as minor league depth if he clears waivers.

Mets acquired RHP Drew Smith from the Rays in exchange for 1B Lucas Duda.

Smith came to Tampa Bay in April as the player to be named later in a deal that sent Mikie Mahtook to Detroit. The 23-year-old isn't considered a top prospect but he throws a mid 90s fastball and has fared reasonably well this year, producing a 1.60 ERA across three minor league levels. Smith will report to Double-A Binghamton.
