Alex Avila went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBI in total in Thursday's win over the Pirates.

Avila hit a two-run blast off Pirates starter Chad Kuhl in the third inning, his third homer of the year, and he added an RBI double in the ninth for good measure. There was some sleeper hype for Avila coming into the year after he performed well in a part-time role with the Tigers and Cubs last year, but he hasn't found the same success in the desert. The 31-year-old is hitting just .124/.240/.219 in 45 games for the Snakes thus far.

Jon Jay went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Pirates.

Jay continues to excel at setting the plate atop the Diamondbacks' lineup, leading off the game with a ground-rule double and scoring later in the inning before knocking a two-run double and scoring another run in the second. He's been especially effective since joining the D'backs on June 6, going 17-for-50 (.340) with 15 runs scored. He's usable in deeper mixed leagues but even with his success, Jay's offensive game really limits him to NL-only in most cases.

Chad Kuhl allowed eight runs on eight hits over two-plus innings in a disastrous start Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

It was clear from the outset of this one that Kuhl didn't have it, as the D'backs put up a three-run first inning before doubling down with three more runs in the second. Unconvinced, Clint Hurdle ran Kuhl back out for the third, but yanked him before the right-hander could record an out. Heading into Thursday, Kuhl had allowed a combined eight earned runs in his previous five starts, an indication of both how good he's been this year and how out of character Thursday's turn was. His ERA rose from 3.76 to 4.56 with the outing, dropping him to an even 5-5 through 15 starts. The 25-year-old will have a good chance to get right Tuesday when the Pirates visit the tumbling Mets.

Zack Godley allowed three runs -- two earned -- over six innings in a win over the Pirates on Thursday.

Godley was much better than he needed to be after the D'backs offense staked him to an eight-run lead. He was a good steward of the run support, allowing four hits and walking three while striking out five over his six innings of work. It was the third consecutive start and his fourth in his last five in which Godley has allowed two earned runs, lowering his ERA for the third straight outing. He'll continue to work on his 4.64 ERA, and will have a good opportunity to do so, Tuesday when the Diamondbacks head east to visit the Marlins.

Jesse Winker hit a grand slam in a six-run sixth inning to help the Reds beat the Cubs 6-2 on Thursday.

The Reds rallied with two outs, pushing across a run with a bases loaded walk, but the Cubs still held a 2-1 lead when Winker stepped in against southpaw Randy Rosario. That changed with one swing, as Winker yanked an inside pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam that ended up being the difference in the game. The homer was the fourth of the year for Winker, who has 23 RBI and 24 runs scored. The 24-year-old is hitting .256/.367/.365 on the year.

Jason Heyward went 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored in Thursday's loss to the Reds.

The Cubs picked up eight hits on the night, with Heyward responsible for four of them. It was his second four-hit game of the month, a month in which he's hitting .324 with an OPS over .800. Overall, the 28-year-old is hitting a respectable .283/.345/.429 through 56 games.
Jun 21 - 11:53 PM

Billy Hamilton had an RBI single, a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's win over the Cubs.

Hamilton was front and center in the Reds' six-run sixth inning, as he drew a leadoff walk and scored before delivering an RBI single of his own later in the frame. The stolen base was just his 14th of the year, easily the most disappointing aspect of his largely disappointing year. Through 70 games, the 27-year-old is hitting .211/.299/.309 overall.
Jun 21 - 11:48 PM

Jeff Samardzija (shoulder) surrendered four hits and two earned runs over four innings Thursday in a rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento.

Samardzija struck out seven while throwing 46 of his 73 pitches for strikes. He allowed a home run to Padres catcher Austin Hedges, who was rehabbing in El Paso. The 33-year-old looks poised to return to the Giants' rotation sometime next week. Teammate Johnny Cueto (elbow) is also on the comeback trail. He'll join Sacramento for a rehab start on Saturday.
