Saints released WR Robert Meachem.
Meachem was hoping to hang on as a situational deep threat. One month shy of his 30th birthday, he should latch on elsewhere after reviving his career in New Orleans last season.
Chargers waived OT Mike Harris.
Willie Smith has earned swing-tackle duties. A 2012 undrafted free agent, Harris was thrust into blindside duties as a rookie after Jared Gaither fell apart, but was limited to 194 snaps a season ago. He has 12 games of starting experience, which should earn him a second chance soon enough.
Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer was removed from the active/PUP list.
Spencer will not be ready Week 1, but he is expected back in the first month of the season. Almost 31 and coming off microfracture surgery, it is not a sure thing Spencer is effective once he gets back on the field. The Cowboys should view anything they get from Spencer this season as a bonus.
Giants waived RB Michael Cox.
Cox got more opportunities than he deserved last season thanks to all the injuries in the Giants' backfield. He ended up with 22 carries for 43 yards and no touchdowns. The Giants have decided to keep Peyton Hillis as their No. 3 running back behind Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams.
Saints released CB Champ Bailey.
The Saints are going with undrafted rookie Brian Dixon instead. Bailey was signed to compete for the No. 2 cornerback job, but now 36, couldn't crack the Saints' loaded defense. The Saints must eat Bailey's $500,000 signing bonus. Bailey was limited to five games by a foot injury for the Broncos last season, and struggled when in the lineup. His résumé will get him another look, but he's near the end.
Bills waived QB Jeff Tuel.
Tuel had beaten out Thad Lewis, but loses his roster spot to newly acquired Kyle Orton. The Bills will likely try to get the former UDFA out of Washington State onto the practice squad.
Jets released CB Dimitri Patterson.
Patterson was suspended until September 1 for going AWOL prior to the Jets' third preseason game. Patterson denied he went AWOL, and generally handled the situation as poorly as he possibly could have. Despite his erratic behavior and subpar play, Patterson will likely land with another team. The Texans are reportedly interested.
Colts waived/released QB Chandler Harnish, DE Gannon Conway, RB David Fluellen, DE Tyler Hoover, OLB Phillip Hunt, ILB Andrew Jackson, WR Ryan Lankford, WR Josh Lenz, C FN Lutz, S Dewey McDonald, DT Nnamdi Obukwelu, CB Sheldon Price, ILB Rob Ruggiero, TE Weslye Saunders, TE Erik Swoope, OG Josh Walker and NT Brandon McKinney.
The No. 253 overall pick of the 2012 draft, Harnish has never attempted a regular-season pass. Fluellen is a candidate for the practice squad, and could eventually reach the 53-man roster considering the state of the Colts' running back corps.
