Kelly Johnson will undergo an MRI after leaving Tuesday's game against the Rangers with a groin injury.

It's been a bad 24 hours for Johnson, as the groin ailment was preceded by the Yankees acquiring Chase Headley to take over at third base. The Bombers should have an update on Johnson's condition on Wednesday.

Chase Whitley held the Rangers scoreless over six innings, but was given a no-decision on Tuesday.

Whitley was excellent on Tuesday, a rare bright spot for the young right-hander. The Rangers scratched out seven hits, but six were singles. Whitley did not issue a walk and struck out six in the process. Whitley still carries an ugly 4.60 ER along with a 1.45 WHIP, and 46/12 K/BB ratio. He'll make his next start against the Blue Jays at home on Sunday.

The Cardinals are considering starting Shelby Miller on Saturday against the Cubs.

Miller was moved to the bullpen immediately following the All-Star break and made a relief appearance Sunday, but the Cards still view him as a starter over the long haul. However, they could still opt to keep him in the 'pen and start Carlos Martinez Saturday.

Bruce Chen held the White Sox to one run over five innings in a win Tuesday.

Chen's only mistake was a home run by Adam Dunn, but the left-hander limited the Sox to four hits and no runs over the rest of his time on the mound. It was his first win since April 19 and just his second win overall. Chen has filled in admirably in Jason Vargas' absence, but with Vargas nearing a return Chen will soon fade back into fantasy irrelevance.

Joakim Soria blew his second save of the season, forking over a run in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Rangers went on to lose in 14.

The Rangers had taken a 1-0 lead on J.P. Arencibia's 13th-inning solo home run, but Soria immediately got into trouble, allowing a lead-off double to Brett Gardner in the bottom half. Jacoby Ellsbury later knocked Gardner in with a single. Soria is now 17-for-19 in save chances with a 2.70 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and a 42/4 K/BB ratio.

J.P. Arencibia broke a 0-0 tie in the 13th inning, his only hit in five at-bats, but the Rangers lost in 14 innings to the Yankees on Tuesday.

Arencibia took David Huff out to right-center to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the 13th, but closer Joakim Soria gave the run right back in the bottom half of the inning. Arencibia has had a miserable year offensively, but he has homered in two of five games since the All-Star break. He's slashing a terrible .139/.186/.291 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 86 plate appearances.

Mike Olt - 3B - Cubs

Cubs optioned 3B Mike Olt to Triple-A Iowa.

The last straw was Olt going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Tuesday, dropping his season line to .139/.222/.353 and his K/BB ratio to 84/19. Olt obviously has plus raw power, but he has a lot of holes in his swing and could struggle to carve out a long-term niche on a team with a boatload of position prospect on the way.
Jul 23 - 12:06 AM

Scott Carroll was roughed up for 11 hits and five runs over five innings in a loss to the Royals on Tuesday.

The right-hander, who had allowed just three hits and zero runs over his past two starts combined, gave up five extra-base hits, including a home run, in the loss. He also walked two and struck out three. Carroll owns a 4.52 ERA and 1.53 WHIP through 73 2/3 innings, and he's a non-factor for fantasy purposes going forward.
