Giants recalled INF Kelby Tomlinson from Triple-A Sacramento.
Tomlinson has hit .321/.376/.414 with 21 stolen bases in 97 games this season between Double-A and Triple-A. He'll provide much-needed depth at second base for the Giants, who just lost Joe Panik to lingering lower back inflammation. Tomlinson could have short-term fantasy value if he fights his way into everyday at-bats.
Giants placed 2B Joe Panik on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation.
Panik admitted after Sunday's game that he's been bothered by back stiffness for the past couple of weeks. Hopefully a bit of time off will do the trick for the 24-year-old, who's enjoying a breakout 2015 season. Ehire Adrianza and callup Kelby Tomlinson figure to share playing time at second base while Panik is sidelined.
Marlins recalled C Tomas Telis from Triple-A New Orleans.
Telis was just acquired from the Rangers at the July 31 trade deadline. He probably won't see much action behind the plate in Miami and can be ignored in fantasy leagues.
Marlins purchased the contract of RHP Brian Ellington from Triple-A New Orleans.
Ellington, 24, was sporting a 2.44 ERA, 0.925 WHIP, and 48/13 K/BB ratio in 44 1/3 innings this season between Double-A and Triple-A. He should do well in mid-relief.
Marlins placed RHP Carter Capps on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain.
It's not clear how long he might be out. Capps has used his funky delivery to become one of the most dominant relievers in baseball this year, boasting a 1.16 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and 58/7 K/BB ratio in 31 innings.
Dodgers 2B prospect Jose Peraza provided three hits in Sunday's doubleheader for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
One of the hits included his first home run as a member of the Dodgers organization. He also stole his 27th base and drove in a pair of runs. Peraza has gone 9-for-23 (.391) during his six-game hitting streak. The 21-year-old joined the Dodgers last week as part of a three-team swap with Atlanta and Miami.
White Sox released C George Kottaras.
The well-traveled veteran catcher was batting .247/.403/.505 with seven home runs and 19 RBI in 31 games for the Triple-A affiliate of the White Sox. Kottaras should be able to latch on with another club rather quickly.
Athletics activated SHP Pat Venditte from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Nashville.
Venditte hit the disabled list on June 12 with a right shoulder strain and is still making rehab appearances at the Triple-A level. The 30-year-old switch-pitcher should get a callup within the next couple of weeks.
