Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer (shoulder) will make his season debut at Low-A Lexington on Friday.

Zimmer had been shut down for a few weeks after having soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder, but he's back on track now. The 23-year-old was one of the best pitching prospects in the game before the shoulder issues cropped up in 2014, but he's playing catch-up now after throwing just 4 2/3 frames since the beginning of last season.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Thursday that Delino DeShields is not ready to make starts at second base.

DeShields played three innings there on Wednesday and Banister considers him "an option" at the position, but it doesn't sound like him getting extensive time at the keystone is in the cards. The 22-year-old began his pro career at second but was poor defensively there, necessitating a move to the outfield. Texas is mixing and matching at second base for now but should give Rougned Odor another shot before long.

The Rangers are expected to call up pitching prospect Chi Chi Gonzalez to make his major league debut on Saturday against the Red Sox.

The club hasn't confirmed it yet, but they tipped their hand when they sent down Phil Klein and scratched Gonzalez from Thursday's scheduled outing at Triple-A Round Rock. Gonzalez holds a pedestrian 4.15 ERA and 26/19 K/BB ratio over 43 1/3 innings for Round Rock this season, but he's been better of late with a 2.20 mark and 13 strikeouts over his last 16 1/3 frames. The 23-year-old is one of the Rangers' best pitching prospects and projects as a mid-rotation starter in time, but he doesn't look ready to make a fantasy impact just yet.

Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) played catch again on Thursday.

Iwakuma was shut down for a while after having a setback with his strained right lat, but Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Thursday that "the discomfort and inflammation has dissipated to the point where he can get out and continue his rehab." The skipper added that he’d be "surprised" if Iwakuma were able to throw a bullpen session in the next 7-8 days, but it does appear progress is being made. "He feels real good," McClendon said, "and we’ll continue to progress with his rehab and see how that goes."

Jake Peavy (back) will make at least two more rehab starts.

Peavy was pummeled for six runs on nine hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings for Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday in his second rehab outing. He got his pitch count up to 76, but the Giants obviously want to see him sharper before he rejoins the rotation. Peavy has battled a back strain dating back to spring training.

Matt Moore (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment next week.

Moore threw 46 pitches in three innings Thursday in his final appearance in extended spring training. Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, the left-hander is looking at a return to the Rays in late June or early July, depending on how many rehab starts they decide he needs.
May 29 - 10:02 AM

Ivan Nova (elbow) will make one more appearance in extended spring training next week before beginning a rehab assignment.

The right-hander threw 63 pitches in his sixth appearance in extended spring on Thursday. Making his way back from Tommy John surgery, Nova will need a handful of rehab starts but should be an option for the Yankees' rotation in late June or early July.
May 29 - 9:36 AM

The Orioles haven't decided whether Bud Norris (bronchitis) will make another rehab start.

Norris allowed four runs in five innings on Wednesday for Double-A Bowie, but manager Buck Showalter said the righty pitched really well the first three frames. Mike Wright wasn't as good Thursday as he was his first two times out, which could potentially open the door for Norris rejoining the rotation next week.
