Rangers pitching coach Doug Brocail told reporters that Yu Darvish (elbow) will likely be limited to 85-90 pitches in his 2016 debut Saturday versus the Pirates.

"That would be a good pitch count," Brocail said. "It all depends on how he looks during the game and how many pitches he has. We're not going to have him go out there and throw 150 pitches. Hopefully he gets out there and uses his fastball to get early outs and uses his pitches wisely and keeps us in the game." Darvish threw 87 pitches over six scoreless innings in his final rehab start Sunday with Double-A Frisco. He had a 0.90 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and 21/6 K/BB ratio in 20 total rehab innings. The ace right-hander is returning from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.

According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, the Dodgers had "a big crew" at a showcase Tuesday in the Dominican Republic that featured Cuban outfielder Lazaro Armenteros and second baseman Jose Miguel Fernandez.

Under their new ownership group the Dodgers have become the most aggressive spenders on international talent in Major League Baseball, and Armenteros and Fernandez are among the most popular names on this year's market. Armenteros, commonly referred to as "Lazarito," is a 17-year-old outfielder with a wide variety of scouting reports -- some very promising, some not so promising. At one point there was talk of him commanding a record sum, but that has cooled. Hernandez is a 27-year-old infielder, also from Cuba, with a much more MLB-ready profile.

Manny Banuelos (elbow) is expected to make his next rehab appearance Friday with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Banuelos got shelled for five runs -- three earned -- over two innings Sunday with Low-A Rome. That was the first live appearance of the season for the 25-year-old former top prospect, who has been on the disabled list since the end of spring training with a left elbow injury. He's not on the fantasy radar.
May 24 - 7:33 PM

Jim Johnson (groin) is nearing a rehab assignment.

Johnson has been on the disabled list since May 9 because of a right groin strain. He had a 7.90 ERA over his first 15 appearances this season for the Braves, so they might have him spend a while in the minor leagues. We'd expect an early-June return for the veteran righty.

Wil Myers said his absence Tuesday was scheduled.

There was some worry about a setback after Myers was spotted with a wrap on his left wrist following Monday's loss to the Giants. He acknowledged experiencing some discomfort while picking up a ball on Monday night, but tests taken Tuesday came back negative. Myers should return to action Wednesday for the Padres' series finale in San Francisco.

Shae Simmons (elbow) is expected to join the Braves within the next two weeks.

Simmons has tallied seven strikeouts in three innings at Triple-A Gwinnett since he was activated off the disabled list and optioned on May 16. The right-hander is on his way back from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. He could quickly move into a high-leverage role in the pathwork Atlanta bullpen.
May 24 - 7:21 PM

Max Kepler has been placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Rochester with a left groin strain.

That injury typically requires at least three weeks of recovery time, unless it's a very minor strain. Kepler is hitting .275/.361/.451 in 119 plate appearances this season with the Twins' Triple-A affiliate. He hit .167/.286/.333 with five strikeouts in 14 plate appearances last month for the major league club.

Yan Gomes is out of the Indians' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the White Sox.

Chris Gimenez will start at catcher and bat eighth versus Chicago lefty Chris Sale. Gomes has six home runs and 21 RBI in 34 games this season, but he's sitting on a rough .173/.207/.362 overall batting line.
