Royals acquired INF/OF Ben Zobrist and cash considerations from the Athletics for RHP Aaron Brooks and LHP Sean Manaea.

The deal is official. Zobrist drew interest from a long list of contenders, but the Royals are going for it and paid the price to bring to bring him into the fold. The 34-year-old impending free agent has an .801 OPS over 67 games this season and can be used in the infield and the outfield. He should be a useful piece for Ned Yost and the first-place Royals.

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com hears that Jonathan Papelbon or his agents are talking to the Nationals about a potential trade.

This presumably means that something is close. At issue with Papelbon is that he has a no-trade clause and has said that he wouldn't sign off on a deal unless he closes. Of course, the Nationals already have an All-Star closer in Drew Storen. Papelbon's contract includes a $13 million vesting option for 2016, which he could want guaranteed as part of the deal.

Mariners prospect SS Ketel Marte went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored on Monday for Triple-A Tacoma.

The four-hit performance extended Marte’s hitting streak to seven games, during which he’s batting .364 with four extra-base hits, nine runs scored and three stolen bases. Though he spent more than a month on the disabled list in June, the 21-year-old switch-hitter has managed to post an impressive .331/.372/.430 batting line with 42 runs, 18 extra-base hits and 20 steals this season over 66 games at Tacoma. Marte should get his first taste of the major leagues as a September call-up, if not sooner.

Mariners prospect OF Tyler O’Neill had a big game Monday for High-A Bakersfield, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI.

O’Neill now has 20 home runs and 13 doubles in 70 games this season to go along with a .255/.296/.529 batting line and 56 RBI. He’s also batting .500 (1.905 OPS) with four home runs and three doubles in his last five games. The 20-year-old’s plus raw power has translated nicely in the hitter-friendly California League this season, but his 92 strikeouts (31.3%) against 14 walks (4.8%) highlights his lack of plate discipline and aggressive approach.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Royals are set to acquire Ben Zobrist from the Athletics.

Just in case it wasn't already clear after the Johnny Cueto deal, the Royals are going for it. Zobrist was a great fit for any contender because of his versatility and he could play second base or left field for Kansas City. The 34-year-old is batting .268/.354/.447 with six home runs and 33 RBI over 67 games this season. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN hears that the Royals will send pitchers Aaron Brooks and Sean Manea to Oakland in the deal.

Athletics prospect 1B Matt Olson went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI on Monday for Double-A Midland.

He’s batting .237/.376/.417 with 12 home runs, 25 doubles, 52 RBI and a 103/76 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 96 games in the Texas League. Olson has been on a power surge of late, as he now has four home runs in his last five games after hitting seven over his previous 91 contests at Midland. After clubbing 37 long balls last season at High-A Stockton and tallying 23 in his full-season debut the previous year, Olson’s sharp drop-off in home runs this season has been a disappointment. However, the good news is he’s continued to take walks (76) and reach base at a high clip (.376) despite facing older and more advanced pitching at the Double-A level.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes that Michael Foltynewicz will likely be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Wednesday against the Orioles.

He'll replace the injured Manny Banuelos (elbow) in the starting rotation, at least on a temporary basis. Foltynewicz owns a 5.29 ERA over nine starts and three relief appearances this season and can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.
Jul 28 - 2:20 PM

Braves placed LHP Manny Banuelos on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 25, with left elbow inflammation.

Banuelos allowed a career-high four runs over five innings last Friday against the Cardinals and apparently didn't come out of the start feeling good. Of course, Banuelos has had Tommy John surgery in the past, so the Braves aren't taking any chances. Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes that Mike Foltynewicz will likely be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Wednesday against the Orioles.
