Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicated Tuesday that Hector Rondon could get another shot in the closer role.
"Of course he could, and I anticipate he will at some point," Maddon said. "I think (Pedro) Strop has that kind of stuff, too. Strop and Rondon are two physically gifted, stuff-wise, closers. We have to get to the point where they are mentally able to deal with that role on a nightly basis. And the big thing is not after they've done well. How do you deal with it after you've not done so well." It's somewhat encouraging for Rendon owners, although Maddon certainly didn't commit to using him in the ninth inning. Jason Motte seems likely to be pulled off the role for now, but we could just see Maddon play the matchups.
Neil Ramirez could be placed back on the disabled list due to recurring right shoulder issues.
Ramirez hasn’t pitched since Saturday and had trouble warming up during Tuesday's game. He returned to action a month ago after missing two months with his shoulder woes and it appears he could be facing another extended absence.
Indians recalled OF Tyler Holt from Triple-A Columbus.
He's taking David Murphy's spot on the roster. Holt has spent almost all season at Columbus, hitting .286/.369/.348 with 20 steals. He'll back up at all three outfield spots.
Kevin Kiermaier (eye) went hitless but had a sac fly in his return to the lineup Tuesday.
Kiermaier had to leave Monday's game after suffering a scratch in his left eye, but he'll be OK. The outfielder is hitting .245/.280/.407 with four homers and 11 steals this season.
Mark Reynolds (hand) doubled in one of his three at-bats in his return to the lineup Tuesday.
Reynolds missed a couple games with a bruised left hand, but he'll be fine. He's batting .230/.312/.395 with nine homers for the Cardinals this season.
Mets signed INF Vince Belnome to a minor league contract.
Belnome was released by the Rays last week after hitting just .169/.293/.225 for Triple-A Durham. The 27-year-old is organizational depth.
Astros released LHP Joe Thatcher.
Thatcher was designated for assignment a week ago despite a decent 3.79 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 19 innings this season. He obviously has his limitations as a left-handed specialist, but someone will pick him up.
Braves recalled RHP Michael Foltynewicz from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Foltynewicz will rejoin the Braves' rotation on Wednesday against the Orioles, replacing Manny Baneulos (elbow). The righty held a 2.17 ERA over his last five outings at Gwinnett and is worth a shot in NL-only leagues.
