Josh Collmenter notched a win Wednesday despite surrendering five earned runs in seven innings to the Rockies.

Collmenter struck out five and didn't issue a walk, but the potent Colorado offense pounded him for 10 hits -- including three home runs. Arizona's offense matched that output and then some, tallying 13 runs on 18 hits. Collmenter will carry a 3-3 record, 3.40 ERA, and 1.18 WHIP into his next start at home against the Padres.

Tyler Matzek allowed four earned runs in two innings Wednesday as the Rockies dropped the first half of a doubleheader against the Diamondbacks.

Matzek was originally expected to pitch Monday, but back-to-back rainouts pushed him into an odd Wednesday afternoon start. And he did not look sharp, yielding six walks and three hits en route to his first loss of the 2015 season. The 24-year-old left-hander is now 2-1 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in 22 innings.

Yasiel Puig (hamstring) will serve as the designated hitter for High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday.

Puig still hadn't resumed running the bases as of Wednesday morning, so it will be interesting to find out how he fares on the basepaths should he reach base. Even so, it's a definite step in the right direction for the outfielder, who is on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain. There's still a chance Puig comes off the DL after his 15 days are up.

Stephen Strasburg (shoulder) played catch Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's start with an apparent injury.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal heard Strasburg left Tuesday with a "cramp" and that a chiropractor adjusted him Wednesday. Whatever the issue, it's promising that he was feeling good enough to throw a day after exiting. The Nationals are still trying to assess the issue, and his status for his next scheduled start is still very much up in the air.

Jake McGee (elbow) is scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Durham on Friday.

The southpaw will likely have at least two more appearances with the Rays' Triple-A affiliate before being activated. McGee hasn't thrown a pitch for the Rays yet this season after offseason elbow surgery. Still, the expectation is that he'll eventually regain the closer job once healthy.
May 6 - 6:23 PM

Sean Doolittle (shoulder) will face live hitters Friday.

That's three days earlier than previously scheduled, a good sign for the lefty's recovery from a rotator cuff injury. Doolittle should be back sometime in May, barring any setbacks.

J.D. Martinez has been dropped to the sixth spot in the Tigers' lineup on Wednesday.

Martinez had hit fourth or fifth in all 26 of his previous starts this year, but he's in a deep slump and batting just .231/.259/.462 for the season. Yoenis Cespedes is batting fifth for the Tigers on Wednesday night.

Jose Iglesias (groin) is back in the Tigers' starting lineup on Wednesday night versus the White Sox.

Iglesias was unavailable Tuesday after leaving Sunday's game with tightness in his left groin. The dynamic young shortstop is batting ninth in his return to action Wednesday against White Sox ace Chris Sale.
