Travis Wood struck out a pair over two perfect innings in Thursday's tie against the Athletics.
It's a nice beginning to his Cactus League schedule as Wood attempts to nail down the fifth spot in the Cubs' rotation. The left-hander put up a disappointing 5.03 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 31 starts last season but is good enough to bounce back to be a solid back-end starter.
Barry Zito yielded two runs on two hits over two innings of work against the Cubs on Thursday.
Zito struck out a pair and didn't walk anyone, but he was burned by a two-run shot delivered by Mike Olt in the second inning. The veteran left-hander is trying to return to the majors in 2015 after sitting out 2014, but he's facing an uphill battle to crack Oakland's Opening Day roster.
Mike Olt belted a two-run homer in Thursday's Cactus League tie against the Athletics.
Olt took veteran left-hander Barry Zito deep in the second inning. The 26-year-old showed power for the Cubs last season, launching 12 homers over just 258 plate appearances, but he hit only .160/.248/.356 overall. He'll compete for playing time at third base until Kris Bryant is ready.
Trevor Cahill tossed two scoreless innings in Thursday's Cactus League victory over the Rockies.
Cahill permitted two hits, walked one and didn't strike out anyone but was able to keep the Rockies off the scoreboard. The veteran right-hander is competing for a spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation but is also reportedly on the trade block.
Braves signed RHP Peter Moylan to a minor league contract.
Moylan is working his way back from a second Tommy John surgery and could be ready for game action by late April/early May, according to Zach Links of MLBTradeRumors.com. The submariner has a career 2.80 ERA, but he's 36 and the track record for pitchers return from two Tommy John surgeries isn't good.
Jhoulys Chacin surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings versus the Diamondbacks on Thursday.
The right-hander struck out one in the effort. Chacin is looking for a bounce-back 2015 season after being limited to just 11 starts last year due to rotator cuff issues. He reported to camp feeling totally healthy.
MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reports that Cuban infielder Hector Olivera's representatives were "surprised" to hear the report about their client having a damaged ulnar collateral ligament.
Sanchez goes on to say that Olivera's reps are "unaware of any UCL damage" and that their client had a private workout for a club last week. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported the news earlier Thursday that Olivera could need Tommy John surgery. We should find out before long who is right about the Cuban defector.
C.J. Cron went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored as the Angels topped the Brewers 3-2 on Thursday.
Cron led off the third inning with a double and later scored. The 25-year-old is coming off of minor wrist surgery. Cron figures to serve in the DH role along with Matt Joyce throughout the year.
