Jane Lee of MLB.com reports that the Athletics are "deep" in trade talks involving Ben Zobrist and a deal could happen soon.
After dealing Scott Kazmir to the Astros last week and Tyler Clippard to the Mets on Monday, Zobrist is likely the next to go. The impending free agent has drawn interest from a long list of teams, including the Royals, Pirates, Angels, Cubs, Yankees, and Giants.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Tigers have Reds right-hander Mike Leake on their radar.
The Tigers are three games under .500 at 48-51, but they are just 4 1/2 games out of the Wild Card and haven't given up on the possibility of contention. Leake would certainly help their rotation. The 27-year-old owns a 3.78 ERA over 20 starts this season and has been on a roll of late. The impending free agent figures to draw a lot of interest.
Rays prospect RHP Taylor Guerrieri has been promoted to Double-A Montgomery.
He posted a 2.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 44/11 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 42 innings (12 appearances/10 starts) at High-A Charlotte. The 22-year-old right-hander also held opposing hitters to a .237 batting average and is yet to allow a home run in 2015. Once viewed as arguably the top prospect in Tampa Bay’s system, Guerrieri logged just 76 1/3 innings between the 2013-14 seasons as a result of Tommy John surgery and a 50-game suspension for a drug of abuse.
Matt Joyce could be placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list.
The Angels are expected to call up Efren Navarro on Tuesday, presumably to replace Joyce on the active roster. Joyce suffered a concussion in a collision with teammate Erick Aybar on Sunday.
The Angels are expected to call up Efren Navarro from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.
It's possible that he'll replace Matt Joyce, who could be headed to the 7-day concussion disabled list. Navarro, 29, has a .260/.306/.312 batting line in 82 plate appearances with the Angels this season.
Pirates prospect SS JaCoby Jones went 3-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base on Monday in his debut for Double-A Altoona.
Jones is receiving his first taste of Double-A after batting .253/.313/.396 with 48 runs scored, 10 home runs, 31 extra-base hits, 58 RBI and 14 steals across 93 games at High-A Bradenton. Unfortunately, the 23-year-old also struck out 113 times (26.7%) against 31 walks (7.3%) in that span, highlighting his limitations as a hitter. Jones’ raw power, speed and overall athleticism should help him carve out a role in the big leagues in the coming years, though he may never develop the consistency to be more than a reserve player.
Cardinals optioned RHP Sam Tuivailala to Triple-A Memphis.
Tuivailala, 22, has a 1.80 ERA with nine strikeouts and six walks over 10 innings this season. The hard-throwing right-hander should get another shot in the Cards' bullpen later this season.
Cardinals activated LHP Jaime Garcia from the 15-day disabled list.
Garcia has missed over a month with a groin strain, but he'll make his return Tuesday against the Reds. The southpaw has a 1.69 ERA and 32/7 K/BB ratio in 48 innings over seven starts this season and should be relevant in mixed fantasy leagues as long as he has a rotation spot.
