Jason Castro is not in the Astros' lineup Friday.
It's a routine day off. Hank Conger is behind the dish in Castro's place.
David Ortiz is not in the Red Sox' lineup Friday.
It's his second straight day of rest, as the club is giving the struggling slugger some time off to work on his swing. Hanley Ramirez is the designated hitter Friday, with Brock Holt handling left field.
Giants signed INF/OF Jeff Kobernus to a minor league contract.
Kobernus has finally latched on somewhere after being released by the Nationals in spring training. The 26-year-old is merely an organizational depth guy.
Mets prospect OF Michael Conforto has been promoted to Double-A Binghamton from High-A St. Lucie.
Selected by the Mets with the No. 10 overall pick in last year’s draft, Conforto is moving up to the Binghamton after batting .283/.350/.462 with seven home runs and 12 doubles in 206 plate appearances in the Florida State League. It was reported in late April that the 22-year-old was nearing a promotion to Double-A, but there wasn’t any harm in the Mets keeping him at St. Lucie for an additional month. Binghamton is set to square off against Altoona tonight on the road, but there’s no word yet whether Conforto will be in the lineup.
Giants signed OF Engel Beltre to a minor league contract.
He had been at Triple-A with the White Sox but was cut loose after batting just .234/.268/.312. Beltre gives the Giants a depth guy with major league experience.
Matt Holliday is not in the Cardinals' lineup Friday.
Holliday was just off on Sunday with a bruised arm but then played the next three games. He doesn't take many days off, so we'll have to see if he's dealing with some sort of ailment. Randal Grichuk is in left field.
Athletics prospect 1B Matt Olson went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and three walks on Thursday for Double-A Midland.
The home run was the seventh of the season for Olson, who finished third in the minor leagues last season with 37. The 21-year-old slugger is batting just .236 through his first 205 plate appearances in the Texas League, but he’s been able to keep his strikeout rate (22.9%) in line with his career average and, more significantly, improve his walk rate (20.5%) against advanced pitching. Olson is a big part of the A’s future, but don’t expect to see him in the major leagues before the 2016 season.
Twins optioned RHP Michael Tonkin to Triple-A Rochester.
Tonkin holds a 5.14 ERA with seven strikeouts over seven relief innings with the big club this season. He'll get another shot at some point.
