Derek Holland (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday.

It's the first time he's thrown off a mound since he went down with a subscapular strain in his left shoulder in early April. There's currently no timetable for Holland's return, but he should be able to begin a rehab assignment before long.

Pirates pitching prospect Jameson Taillon will undergo surgery next week to repair an inguinal hernia.

The procedure will sideline him for two months. It's some more rotten luck for Taillon, who now is facing a second straight lost season after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Taillon will turn just 24 over the winter but will need to make up for the time he's lost.

Sonny Gray (illness) is not expected to need a stint on the disabled list.

Gray has started to feel much better the last couple days after being knocked out for a while with a bout of salmonella. He should be ready to rejoin the Athletics' rotation early next week.

Cubs optioned RHP Donn Roach to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs picked up Clayton Richard from the Pirates, so Roach was no longer needed for Saturday's start. He was touched up for eight hits and four runs over just 3 1/3 innings by the Cardinals last weekend.

Cubs acquired LHP Clayton Richard from the Pirates in exchange for cash considerations; purchased his contract from Triple-A Iowa.

Richard could have opted out of his deal, but instead the Pirates will get a little money to move him elsewhere. The veteran left-hander will start on Saturday versus the Marlins, as the Cubs have sent down Donn Roach. Richard hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013 but has had a nice year at Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a 2.09 ERA over nine starts. He struck out just 25 over 56 innings.

Jake Odorizzi (oblique) will make one more rehab start before being activated from the disabled list.

Odorizzi pitched well for High-A Charlotte on Wednesday, allowing just one run on two hits and one walk over four innings. He only got his pitch count up to 57, though, so the Rays will have him stretch out a little more. He'll rejoin the big club's rotation on July 11.
Jul 3 - 5:34 PM

Tom Koehler limited the Cubs to just one run across six innings in a 2-1 win Friday.

Koehler yielded just five hits -- four singles -- on the day, striking out four while issuing one free pass and hitting a batter. He was pulled after six even though he'd thrown just 91 pitches, but the move proved to be a wise one as the Marlins' bullpen took care of business. Koehler boasts a 2.88 ERA over eight starts since re-joining the rotation after a brief demotion to the bullpen. He'll get the Reds at home next week to close out his first half.
Jul 3 - 5:31 PM

A.J. Ramos nailed down his 13th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's win over the Cubs.

Ramos surrendered a leadoff single to Chris Coghlan, but a fielder's choice, a groundout and a strikeout got him out of the frame and allowed him to preserve the one-run victory. Since taking over the closer duties, Ramos has permitted just three runs over 21 appearances while converting 13 of 14 save opportunities.
