Jake Lamb (shoulder) will be shut down for the next few days due to tendinitis in his right elbow.

Lamb had finally been making progress in his recovery from an AC sprain in his left shoulder and was nearing a return, but this will set him back a bit. At this point, a return before the end of April seems optimistic.

Javier Baez went 2-for-6 with a solo home run and two-run double to help the Cubs outlast the Rockies 9-7 on Sunday.

Baez hit a no-doubter to the deepest part of the park in the second inning, and he later tacked on a two-RBI double in the seventh to extend the Cubs' lead. The homer was his seventh of the year, and the second baseman leads the National League with 23 RBI. He's hitting .292/.363/.736 through 19 games, and after a breakout last season, this year could be the one in which Baez becomes a star.

Trevor Story went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored in a loss to the Cubs on Sunday.

It goes down as a triple in the record books, but Story's lazy fly ball to right field got lost in the sun, causing Jason Heyward to fall down while missing the ball entirely. His other two hits were less fluky, and Story has been on a bit of a heater in recent games, collecting nine hits in his last 20 at-bats. The good stretch has his season line up to .244/.340/.463 with four homers, 12 RBI, eight runs and four steals to boot.

Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored in Sunday's loss to the Cubs.

Blackmon and Nolan Arenado went back-to-back against Cubs starter Jose Quintana in the fifth inning, giving Blackmon an NL-leading eight homers this year. His 15 RBI and 18 runs scored also rank among the best in the league, and he's slashing a cool .304/.392/.696 through 18 games. We all thought last year's output was the high water mark, but Blackmon appears to have other ideas.

Brandon Morrow allowed three baserunners but avoided any damage Sunday, closing out the Rockies to earn his fourth save of the year.

Morrow gave up one-out singles to Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story to bring the winning run to the plate, and with two outs he walked David Dahl to load the bases. A wild pitch then appeared to allow one run to score, but on review Arenado was called out on the tag at home, allowing Morrow to escape the jam unscathed. It was his closest call yet, but Morrow remains unscored upon in eight appearances, racking up four saves in his 6 1/3 innings of work.

German Marquez allowed eight hits and six runs while lasting just 3 1/3 innings Sunday against the Cubs.

Marquez hit Kris Bryant in the helmet with a pitch just a few batters into the game, which speaks to his command issues and could explain why he lacked focus as the game wore on, as he was visibly upset by the incident. Command problems are nothing new for Marquez, who has now walked 13 in 22 innings of work this year. That has contributed to his 6.14 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through five starts. An easier assignment awaits Marquez on Saturday when the Rockies visit the Marlins.
Apr 22 - 7:19 PM

Jose Quintana allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings Sunday but earned the win against the Rockies.

Quintana served up a pair of homers in the thin mountain air, but he struck out seven while walking just one and did enough to pick up his second win of the year. It's been a pretty mixed bag thus far, and outside of a six-inning gem in Milwaukee earlier this month there hasn't been a lot to like about Quintana's early stats. That said, he's traditionally a slow starter -- April is, for his career, his worst month, statistically -- so as the weather warms up, so might he. Quintana will look for sunnier skies Saturday against the Brewers.
Apr 22 - 7:18 PM

Adrian Beltre went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored to lead the Rangers past the Mariners 7-4 on Sunday.

Beltre was in the middle of the action Sunday, scoring in the second, fourth and eighth innings to help the Rangers avoid a sweep. He's now got 10 runs on the year, and the two-hit game brought his line up to .300/.366/.425. The power hasn't come yet, but the 39-year-old remains a productive player regardless.
