Ben Zobrist (wrist) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Tennessee on Thursday.

Zobrist has been out of action with left wrist inflammation since June 13. Now that he is ready for a rehab assignment, it might not be long before he is ready to return to the team. That could potentially come at some point next week.

Marcus Stroman hurled 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to beat the Orioles 4-0 on Wednesday.

He punched out eight batters and walked just one. He surrendered five base hits -- all singles -- and took advantage of an early lead to cruise through the game without much of a challenge. His record improves to 8-4 with a 3.41 ERA in 16 starts. He has 84 strikeouts and 24 walks in 100 1/3 innings of work.

Kris Bryant left Wednesday's game against the Nationals due to what the Cubs are terming a "mild-to-moderate" right ankle sprain.

Bryant rolled his ankle when he stepped on third base after catching a routine pop up in the fifth inning. A subsequent X-ray came back negative for structural damage. The Cubs have not yet determined whether the reigning NL MVP will require a stay on the disabled list. He will be reevaluated on Thursday.

Steve Pearce went 3-for-3 and scored a run in Wednesday's win over the Orioles.

All three hits were singles. The veteran has missed a lot of time with various injuries and got off to an awful start to the season but has turned things around of late. He is batting .275/.328/.459 with five homers and 16 RBI in 109 at-bats.

Justin Smoak cracked a solo home run in a win over the Orioles on Wednesday.

He turned around a Wade Miley pitch in the fourth inning as he went deep for the 21st time, setting a new career high and we haven't even reached the All Star break yet. He hit 20 homers in 131 games back in 2013. Last year he had a .217 batting average with 14 home runs and 34 RBI in 126 games. This year he has a .301 batting average with 21 homers and 49 RBI in 76 games. Go figure.
Jun 28 - 10:00 PM

Trey Mancini went 2-for-4 with two singles and two strikeouts during Wednesday's loss to the Blue Jays.

His team managed only five base hits in the shutout loss. Mancini just keeps rolling along and shows no signs of slowing down. The rookie has a .323 batting average with 14 home runs and 43 RBI in 63 games.

Wade Miley took a loss after giving up four runs -- three earned -- in five innings against the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

He surrendered solo homers to Jose Bautista and Justin Smoak. The last two runs scored on a bases-loaded, fielder's choice grounder marred by a throwing error. Miley issued four walks, struck out four batters and allowed a total of six hits. He falls to 3-6 with a 4.54 ERA and scary 1.66 WHIP.

Freddie Freeman (wrist) took batting practice on Wednesday.

This was the first time Freeman has taken batting practice since fracturing his left wrist. So long as he does not feel any discomfort over the next two days, he is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. The third-baseman-to-be hopes to be activated from the disabled list on July 6. That would be a fantastic turnaround on the recovery front given that he was initially expected to be out until August or close to it.
