Drew Smyly pitched well in six innings, giving up only one run, but took a tough-luck loss against the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Smyly was hanging tough with Rick Porcello until Mookie Betts broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. He gave up only two hits and two walks while striking out six on the evening. The lefty got a late start to the season due to tendinitis in his left shoulder, but has looked good in three starts thus far. He carries a 2.70 ERA with a 0.78 WHIP and a 21/3 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings. Smyly will take on the Rangers at home in his next outing.

Rick Porcello scattered eight hits over seven scoreless innings to pick up the win versus the Rays on Tuesday.

All eight hits were singles. As he didn't issue any walks and struck out six, he made it difficult for the Rays to do much of anything with an extra-base hit. The Red Sox entered Tuesday's action with the AL's worst starting rotation ERA at 5.73, so they badly needed Porcello's strong outing. Porcello now has a 4.38 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP and a 35/10 K/BB ratio in 39 innings. He'll look for more of the same when he takes on the Athletics in Oakland next.
May 5 - 10:06 PM

Mookie Betts provided all of the offense the Red Sox needed on Tuesday, hitting two solo home runs in a shutout win over the Rays.

The game was scoreless until Betts clubbed a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth off of Drew Smyly. He added a second solo shot in the eighth off of Ernesto Frieri. Betts has otherwise been treading water offensively, batting .234/.306/.411 with four home runs, 17 RBI, and five stolen bases.

Kelly Johnson hit a three-run home run, then singled for his 1,000th career hit as the Braves beat the Phillies 9-0 on Tuesday.

Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a walk. He drilled a three-run home run off of Chad Billingsley in the fourth inning to put the Braves up 6-0. In the sixth, he singled to right-center off of Elvis Araujo to earn his 1,000th career hit. Johnson's return to Atlanta has been a good one, as he's hitting .266/.319/.578 with six home runs and 17 RBI.
May 5 - 9:59 PM

Freddie Freeman went 3-for-4 with a walk, a two-run home run, and three runs scored as the Braves trampled the Phillies on Tuesday.

Freeman gave the Braves an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the first inning off of Chad Billingsley. It was a cakewalk for the Braves from there. Freeman hadn't homered since April 18 but has otherwise hit well. He has five home runs, 14 RBI, and a .301/.363/.534 battling line.
May 5 - 9:57 PM

Chad Billingsley, making his first major league start since April 15, 2013, struggled in a loss to the Braves, allowing six runs (five earned) in five innings of work on Tuesday.

The struggles aren't unexpected given Billingsley's long road back to the majors following multiple elbow issues. The Braves scored twice in the first inning on Freddie Freeman's two-run home run and four times in the fourth following Cody Asche's fielding error and a three-run Kelly Johnson home run. Overall, Billingsley surrendered eight hits and a walk while striking out two. He'll try again in start number two next week at home against the Pirates. We don't recommend giving him room on your fantasy roster.
May 5 - 9:55 PM

Shelby Miller needed only 99 pitches to wrap up a shutout against the Phillies on Tuesday, improving his record to 4-1.

Sure, it was against the Phillies, but a 99-pitch shutout is always impressive. Miller held the Phillies to three hits and a walk while fanning eight. Miller, acquired from the Cardinals in the Jason Heyward trade last November, has done a terrific job in six starts for the Braves, sporting a 1.66 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 31/13 K/BB ratio in 38 innings. He'll toe the rubber in Cincinnati against the Reds next.
May 5 - 9:51 PM

Jeurys Familia earned his 11th save of the season despite allowing a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 win against the Orioles.

Familia gave up a leadoff solo home run to Chris Davis to cut the Mets' lead to 3-2, but he got a strikeout from Delmon Young, a fly out from Caleb Joseph, and a ground out from Travis Snider to end the contest. Familia is now 11-for-11 in save opportunities with a 1.88 ERA, 0.56 WHIP, and a 17/3 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings. The Mets couldn't have asked for much more in a pinch after losing Jenrry Mejia.
