Adam Wainwright was charged with three runs -- one earned -- over four innings of work versus the Marlins on Thursday.
He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out one. It wasn't a great outing for Wainwright but was certainly a monumental improvement from his last one when he was lit up for 10 runs over 1 2/3 frames. Waino did pitch well in his two outings prior to the 10-run fiasco, so we'll give him a little break.
Brewers farm director Tom Flanagan confirmed Thursday that pitching prospect Devin Williams recently underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
Williams paid a visit to Dr. James Andrews earlier this month after experiencing discomfort in his throwing elbow, and major surgery was apparently the recommendation. The 22-year-old right-hander will miss the entire 2017 season and the early part of 2018. A second-round pick in 2013, he posted a 3.79 ERA and 94/64 K/BB ratio in 97 1/3 innings last summer between Low-A Wisconsin and High-A Brevard County.
Steven Souza ripped open a blister on the palm of his left hand Thursday in a Grapefruit League game.
That's why he made an early exit. Souza could be held out of action for a couple of days, but this shouldn't affect his status for the opening of the 2017 regular season. Unless it's a blister of the Rich Hill variety.
Andre Ethier underwent X-rays and a CT scan on his ailing back Tuesday.
Ethier also received an epidural injection and told reporters Thursday that he felt immediate pain relief afterward. He's still awaiting the full results of Tuesday's exam. The veteran outfielder looks questionable for the beginning of the 2017 regular season, but there is nothing official yet.
Mike Montgomery will begin the 2017 season in the Cubs' bullpen.
Montgomery got a look for an Opening Day rotation spot this spring, as promised, but the Cubs are going with Brett Anderson as their No. 5 starter. Montgomery posted an impressive 2.52 ERA in seven starts and 42 relief appearances last year between Seattle and Chicago.
Brett Anderson has made the Cubs' rotation.
He essentially beat out Mike Montgomery. Anderson projects to start the Cubs' fourth regular-season game, behind Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta, and John Lackey. Kyle Hendricks, last year's ERA king, will open the 2017 regular season as the Cubs' fifth starter.
Yasiel Puig (calf) is back in the Dodgers' Cactus League lineup on Thursday.
Puig has been held out of action this week after feeling a tweak in his left calf Sunday while trying to steal a base. It sounds like this is minor, but we all know about Puig's long history of leg issues. He remains a high-risk, high-reward type of fantasy outfielder leading into the 2017 regular season.
Cubs reassigned RHP Williams Perez, RHP Dylan Floro, and LHP David Rollins to minor league camp.
Another round of cuts from Cubs camp, and no real surprises. Perez signed a non-guaranteed minor league contract with Chicago in February after posting a rough 6.04 ERA in 53 2/3 innings last season for the Braves.
