Nationals activated OF Eury Perez from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

Perez's fractured left toe has healed, but he'll remain at Syracuse instead of joining the big club. The speedy outfielder hasn't appeared in the majors this season.

Nationals recalled LHP Matt Purke from Double-A Harrisburg; placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a left elbow injury.

The move clears a spot on the Nationals' 40-man roster. Purke had Tommy John surgery in late May and will be sidelined until around midseason next year.

Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets are willing to eat about $2 million of what remains on Bartolo Colon’s two-year, $20 million contract.

Colon is making $9 million this season and is owed $11 million next year. Martino adds that it's "been clear for weeks" that the Mets would like to trade Colon, who has posted a 4.03 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 100/19 K/BB ratio in 134 innings this season. He might wind up being a fallback option for contenders that lose out on the bigger names on the market.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro has denied speculation that the team has considered releasing Ryan Howard.

"That is not something we are contemplating," Amaro said. "I don’t know where that’s coming from." While the Phillies might not be considering releasing Howard, there's no doubt that they're trying to trade him. The first baseman is now in a platoon situation and is still owed $60 million after this season. Howard has batted just .236/.306/.418 over the last three seasons.

Taylor Jordan has not pitched for Triple-A Syracuse since June 5 because of right elbow soreness.

"He had an MRI," Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said. "The MRI is fine. We wanted to see, what’s the discomfort coming from?" Although the Nats don't seem to be sure exactly what injury Jordan is dealing with, Rizzo did add that the club is "not too worried" about the pitcher potentially needing what would be his second Tommy John surgery. Obviously, Jordan is not going to be an option for the big league club anytime soon.

Jimmy Rollins' $11 million option for 2015 will vest with two more plate appearances.

The only thing that would potentially keep the option from being guaranteed would be Rollins ending the season on the disabled list, but even then the option will kick in if a doctor deems him ready for Opening Day 2015. Rollins, 35, is having a solid season, batting .243/.326/.398 with 13 homers, 45 RBI and 19 stolen bases. The veteran shortstop has 10-and-5 no-trade rights but indicated last month that he could be willing to waive them should the Phillies have a firesale.

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said in an interview on CBS Sports 920 Friday that the Cardinals trading for a catcher is "in play."

Strauss mentioned Kurt Suzuki as someone who "would make sense," which is no surprise since the Cards are known to be scouting the Twins backstop. Tony Cruz and George Kottaras are batting a combined .156 (5-for-32) since Yadier Molina (thumb) went down, so St. Louis could look to upgrade for the next month or so until Yadi returns.

Brandon Belt (concussion) admitted Thursday that he's yet to feeling any improvement with his post-concussion symptoms.

Belt will visit with a specialist this weekend in San Francisco. The first baseman has been sidelined for the last week after being hit with an errant throw during batting practice and his return is nowhere in sight. Perhaps there will be more clarity with his situation after he's seen the specialist.
