Twins pitching prospect Stephen Gonsalves set a new career-high with 12 strikeouts Tuesday in a win for Low-A Cedar Rapids.

Eight of his first nine outs came on strikeouts including the first four hitters he faced. The 20-year-old left-hander leads the Midwest League with 66 Ks this season. He's also second in WHIP (0.79) and third in ERA (1.31). Gonsalves seems to have outgrown Cedar Rapids. The next step for him would be a promotion to High-A Fort Myers in the Florida State League.

Orioles pitching prospect Eddie Gamboa threw six hitless innings of relief Tuesday for Triple-A Norfolk.

It was Gamboa's first relief outing of the season. The right-hander wasn't as sharp as the numbers indicate. He walked four hitters and only threw 52 of his 102 pitches for strikes. But for knuckleballers, a high walk rate comes with the territory. The 30-year-old has held opponents to a .227 average across 188 plate appearances this year and figures to get a shot at the major leagues later this season. Gamboa was actually called up for a two-day stint in April but never appeared in a game.

James McCann is not in the Tigers' lineup Wednesday.

It's simply a day of rest with it being a day game after a night game. Bryan Holaday is behind the dish in McCann's place.

Jose Iglesias (knee) remained out of the Tigers' lineup Wednesday.

He's now missed four straight starts with a sore left knee. Iglesias remains day-to-day. Dixon Machado is filling in at shortstop Wednesday.

Alex Wilson will start on Wednesday versus the Athletics.

Kyle Ryan wasn't able to get to the ballpark in time, forcing Wilson to come in from the bullpen for a spot start. Ryan figures to arrive at some point during the game, so it basically could just wind up being he and Wilson flip-flopping the order in which they pitch.

Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports that the Angels have acquired Kirk Nieuwenhuis from the Mets in a trade.

Nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment last week and New York had been working on a deal to move him elsewhere. Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times says the Mets will receive cash considerations in return. The outfielder is a career .230/.302/.374 hitter over parts of four seasons and can serve as a backup at all three outfield spots.

Diamondbacks pitching prospect Wei-Chieh Huang punched out eight hitters Tuesday in his debut for Low-A Kane County.

The 21-year-old tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings, limiting Quad Cities to two hits and one walk. Huang's changeup is already major-league-ready but he's still working to fill out the rest of his repertoire. Arizona signed Huang in July after watching him pitch at the National Taiwan University of Physical and Sport.

Marcus Semien is not in the Athletics' lineup Wednesday.

Semien has just three hits over his last 27 at-bats and has really struggled defensively, so the A's are giving him a breather. Eric Sogard is handling shortstop in his place.
