Matt Shoemaker held the A's to two runs over five innings to pick up his first win Wednesday.

It's the fourth time in five starts that Shoemaker has allowed exactly two runs, but this is the first time he's been sufficiently supported by the offense and bullpen. He still hasn't had any truly great outings and his one particularly ugly one is still taking a toll on his ERA, leaving him at 4.73. However, he should have mixed-league value going forward.

Bud Norris pitched a perfect ninth against the A's for his third save Wednesday.

Norris got two strikeouts, both looking, in protecting the three-run lead tonight. He's 3-for-3 in saves since Cam Bedrosian went down.
Apr 27 - 2:32 AM

Cameron Maybin went 3-for-4 with three RBI against the A's on Wednesday.

A rare sign of life from an Angels left fielder. Maybin had just two RBI in 57 at-bats this season before knocking in three tonight. He's batting .230/.319/.311.
Apr 27 - 2:31 AM

Yunel Escobar went 0-for-5 against the A's on Wednesday, dropping his average to .236.

It's not going to matter much unless C.J. Cron or Jefry Marte can get hot, but Escobar should also be vulnerable to losing playing time when Luis Valbuena comes off the DL. His OBP stands at .292 at the moment, and it's not like he can make up for it with power or particularly strong defense. In fact, he made his fifth error tonight.
Apr 27 - 2:30 AM

Yonder Alonso went 2-for-4 with a homer Wednesday against the Angels.

We can't guarantee that Alonso is going to remain an effective offensive player, but we can pencil him in for double-digit homers for the first time in his career. His overhauled approach is leading to many more flyballs and many more strikeouts. So far, it's gotten him a .926 OPS.
Apr 27 - 2:28 AM

Christian Arroyo hit his first big-league homer off Sergio Romo to help the Giants edge the Dodgers 4-3 in 10 innings Wednesday.

Arroyo's homer put the Giants on the board in the seventh. Interestingly, the Giants picked Eduardo Nunez over Arroyo as the shortstop today with Brandon Crawford out. Arroyo was still playing more short that anything else in Triple-A, and he should be better there than Nunez. Arroyo did finish the game at short after Nunez moved to left field.
Apr 27 - 2:20 AM

Johnny Cueto yielded three runs in six innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Dodgers.

Cueto lowered his ERA to 5.10 tonight, but he did give up another homer, bringing his total to six surrendered in 29 innings. That's a remarkably unusual pace for him. Last year, he gave up a total in 219 2/3 innings. That so many more hitters are going up and looking to hit flyballs could be harming him more than most.
Apr 27 - 2:19 AM

Alex Wood allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings Wednesday against the Giants.

Wood opened the season in the pen, so he was pulled after 77 pitches tonight. It was the right decision from Dave Roberts, but it probably cost the Dodgers the game, as the bullpen gave up runs in n the seventh, eighth and 10th innings. Wood is making a case to stay in the rotation after Rich Hill comes off the disabled list. He'll get one more start next week, presumably again against the Giants, before any decisions are made.
