Manny Machado went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI in a loss to the Blue Jays on Thursday.

With his 20th multi-hit game of the season, his batting line now sits at .330/.362/.527 on the year. Machado leads the majors with 21 doubles through 47 games. At this rate, he could become the first player since 1936 to make it to 60 doubles in a season. Colorado's Todd Helton had 59 in 2000 while teammate Brian Roberts had 56 in 2009. Earl Webb set the all-time record with 67 back in 1931.

Twins purchased the contract of RHP P.J. Walters from Triple-A Rochester.

That means we'll have to wait a little longer for Kyle Gibson to arrive. Walters and Samuel Deduno will join the rotation this weekend, taking the spots vacated by Vance Worley and Pedro Hernandez. He's put up a 3.31 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 54 1/3 innings this season at Rochester.

Phillies purchased the contract of INF/OF Michael Martinez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Martinez has batted .226/.297/.274 with three steals at Lehigh Valley this season. He'll provide depth with Chase Utley on the DL.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Kevin Jepsen (triceps) is "close" to rejoining the bullpen.

Jepsen, who has been out since mid-April with a triceps ailment, will make a third rehab appearance this week, but it sounds like it could be his final one. He'll return to middle relief for the Halos.

Pedro Florimon Jr. left Thursday's game against the Tigers with a right index finger sprain.

It's not clear how long the malady might sideline the infielder. Eduardo Escobar took Florimon's spot at shortstop Thursday.

Will Middlebrooks left Thursday's game against the Indians after the fourth inning with lower back spasms.

Middlebrooks struck out the inning before, but it's not clear if he tweaked something during that at-bat or earlier. It's not clear at this point how serious the ailment is. The Red Sox should provide an update after the game.

Jeff Fletcher of the Orange Country Register reports that Tommy Hanson "could be weeks away" from rejoining the Angels' rotation.

Hanson has been away from the team since early May due to the death of his step-brother, and he's now in extended spring training trying to regain his stamina. It sounds like Halos fans will have to deal with Joe Blanton for a while longer.

Phillies placed 2B Chase Utley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with a mild oblique strain.

General manager Ruben Amaro described the strain as "very mild," so, all things considered, it's pretty good news for the Phils. Amaro is hopeful that Utley will be ready when his two weeks are up, but it's possible he could be out as long as four weeks. Freddy Galvis will function as the primary second baseman while Utley is out. The team will make a corresponding move prior to Friday's game.
