Phillies optioned RHP Hector Neris to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Neris tossed 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings during his brief time with the big club. He's clearing out to make room for Severino Gonzalez, who will start on Tuesday.

Cole Hamels finally won his first game, yielding just one run over seven innings on Monday versus the Cardinals.

Though the Phillies only provided him a total of six runs of support over his first four starts, Hamels hadn't pitched particularly well either. It was a different story on Monday night. The Phillies scored three times behind Hamels (four total) while the lefty limited the Cardinals to four hits and four walks with nine strikeouts. Hamels' control is a bit concerning as he has 16 walks in 31 innings now. Nevertheless, he heads into a weekend start against the Marlins with a 3.19 ERA.

Jimmy Nelson gave up seven runs (six earned) in 2 1/3 innings, taking the loss as the Brewers were handed a 9-6 defeat by the Reds on Monday.

Nelson had poor control in this one, walking five Reds batters while allowing six hits and striking out only one. The 25-year-old had been superb in his first three starts, but some bumps in the road are to be expected in his first full season in the rotation. Nelson, now with a 3.63 ERA and an 18/9 K/BB ratio in 22 1/3 innings, will hope for better results in a start at Wrigley Field against the Cubs next.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said after Monday's game that Gregory Polanco (groin) is considered day-to-day.

Hurdle revealed that Polanco suffered the injury over the weekend in Arizona while running the bases. It appears to be a minor issue, but expect the Pirates to be careful here and give Polanco at least another day or two of rest. Andrew Lambo went hitless in four at-bats Monday as Polanco's replacement in right field.

Todd Frazier went 0-for-1 in Monday's win over the Brewers, drawing three walks, stealing two bases, and scoring three runs.

Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson battled his control, responsible for two of Frazier's three walks on the evening. Frazier is now up to three steals on the season while hitting .250/.358/.529 with five home runs, 14 RBI, and 15 runs scored. He enjoyed a 20/20 season in 2014 and could be on his way to a repeat performance this season.

Jay Bruce - OF - Reds

Jay Bruce walked three times and smacked a two-run home run Monday in a win against the Brewers.

Bruce was joined by teammate Todd Frazier in the three-walk club against the Brewers on Monday. His home run, number four on the season, came in the second inning against Jimmy Nelson which started a four-run rally. Despite the long ball, Bruce has mostly done little at the plate this season, currently hitting .175/.293/.381 with four home runs and 12 RBI.

Yunel Escobar (hand) expects to miss 1-2 games.

Escobar suffered a lacerated hand when he was spiked by the Braves' Andrelton Simmons on a play at third base Monday. He had to be bandaged up but avoided any broken bones.
Apr 27 - 10:54 PM

A.J. Cole will make his major league debut on Tuesday versus the Braves.

The Nationals have decided to keep Tanner Roark in the bullpen rather than giving him the spot start. Ranked by Baseball America before the season as the team's No. 6 prospect, Cole boasts a 2.40 ERA and 10/1 K/BB ratio over his first 15 innings at Triple-A Syracuse this season. He'll be making just the one start, as Max Scherzer (thumb) is expected to be ready in a couple days.
